With the right minimal up front investment long term border security could be fairly inexpensive. Laser perimeter systems, unmanned drones and a a resonable number of small "squads" for enforcement during an illegal crossing is a good start. Requiring all entries to occur at established points with an internationally recognized document like a passport is also a good idea. Software can be written to track entry, exit, duration and planned visiting destination for internal enforcement.
None of this stuff is rocket science, just common sense. Funding can come from new Passports, auctioning of confiscated drug runner equipment and fines levied against businesses who hire illegals.
The poster posted exactly what FoxNews said, and then posted a link directly to the story. If it was the context of what he said, then by all means why not just address that concern before the witless namecalling? At least he went to the effort of posting it as per the rules here on FR. So you are able to get all that out of Bush asking for a review of passports being used to re-enter your own country?
Not at all. But certainly his highly visible statement about a review of the passport issue signals what that review is pretty likely to contain. And it will likely fit in with all of the rest of his poor handling of the immigration and border control issues. They are all tied together, and even if you are pleased with his efforts, most Americans are not, and a large number of Freepers are not.
Not when some jurisdictions are willing to issue them to illegals!
My husband and I have been carrying our passports every time we cross the border since 9/11. It sure makes things easy, fewer questions no problems.
You obviously have not traveled very much. How do you propose Americans identify themselves on their return? Americans must use their passports on return from Europe, Asia, Africa, etc. Canada and Mexico are exceptions.

Once we require the passport to reenter, Canada and Mexico will require it to get into their countries.

Many areas of the border are uncrossable due to the heat and desert. We had control of the borders before political correctness corrupted our society and can have control again. It is not really a matter of cost but efficiency. However saying we should just leave the borders wide open is ridiculous!

My post asserts that even if you locked the border up 100% on 9/10/2001 and shut down all immigration and import/export activity (and all commerce)....then bin laden still could've easily pulled off 9/11 with the exact same folks.
Armchair whiners will not confront the reality that there must be a cost benefit for funding the border security. There's obviously a large continuum between just leaving the border as is and "no money" at all for border security....don't be ridiculous.
But if you can inhibit terrorism by attacking its source, then that should be priority #1, not by buying MORE donut eating border patrols.

What's so hard about showing your passport at the border? You have to show your drivers license when pulled over by the police. Is that a big pain in your a**, too? You can get the passport at the same place that you need to go to renew your driver's license. Do you drive? Maybe you shouldn't, if its such a bother to have to go to the secretary of states office. Sheesh!
Same here. He would be just as lax on the border.
Maybe this would be a good time to start getting Tancredo's name more recognition. Start plastering his name all over the place. Get him more visible. That way people will already be familiar with who he his when it comes time to start thinking about the next President.
