Janet Grammer decided in an instant: Thursday wasn't her day to die.
So when a would-be robber burst into a Jacksonville convenience store shortly before 1 p.m. and fired two shots while demanding she clean out the cash register, the 64-year-old clerk and mother of 10 knew one thing.
"I figured either I was going to have to pull the trigger or I'd be dead," said Grammer.
So she did.
Faking a moment's hesitation, Grammer reached under the counter for a .38 special and came up firing, her first shot hitting the man in the chest at point-blank range.
The force knocked him down and jolted the gun from his hand, she said. As the man staggered for the door of Apple Gate Food Store at Wesconnett Boulevard and 105th Street, she fired two more rounds, police said.
The suspect left a trail of blood before running into nearby woods, authorities said.
Resident Jake Thornton, 27, said he heard five gunshots before a man ran by his house clutching his side.
He applauded Grammer's actions as he retraced the suspect's path with a detective later Thursday.
"I think it's great. We need more people like her in this town," he said.
A man fitting the robber's description went to the Orange Park Medical Center a short time after the robbery attempt as a police helicopter and canine units scoured the neighborhood for the robber.
The man told doctors he shot himself. He was taken by helicopter to Shands Jacksonville, according to police, who did not identify the man but confirmed he was in custody.
The incident would have been the store's third robbery in two weeks without Grammer's quick thinking, said store owner George Rubboz.

What a great story ping!
True but a handgun can drop a man on the spot depending where he is hit and the adrenilin flow at the time. Sort of like a deer shot through the heart with a 12 guage slug, seen em run a half mile before they ran out of blood.
Sound like a job for the !!
Matter a fact they did this not long ago.
They hung a pig carcass on a hook and all the bullets, they tried many calibers, went straight through the pig.
It only fell after a round hit the shoulder blade and that shook it off.
uh.... I think my 14.45 ParaOrdnance might cause somebody to "falter"... and if I hit them in the sternum.... I'm thinking yep, it'll knock you down...

Good for her!
Stacked and packed
Great, great grandmother at age 64 ...
which means the average age the mother's gave birth is 16 years old.
Maybe I'm missing something.
I lined up 15 of my closest friends yesterday and shot them in the chest with my 14.45 ParaOrdnance, just as a test. None of them felt a thing and all of the women kissed me afterwards.
Seriously, however, my choice of words was unfortunate in my earlier comment, but still, handgun bullets will kill you, but will not physically push you backwards.
I have a suspicion that she doesn't own the weapon--that it was the property of the person who owns the store. A lot of people, and she probably falls into this category, simply can't afford to purchase the gun of their choice.
WoW. Amazing story! Not only is she brave for shooting the perp, but she's brave to have 10 kids too. LOL I cannot even imagine having that many. ;-)
A story for EVERYONE to read... Way to Go FLORIDA !!
I was robbed at gunpoint while working at a gas station when I was 16 near Newark, N.J. Guess what? I gave those guys what they saw in the cash drawer and they ran off with $40. There was another $200 they didn't see that "disappeared" before the cops arrested them down the block:) I I.D.'d them and off they went. I considered it hazardous duty pay. Even at a squirty, snotty 16, I knew it was a business expense for the owner. I got another after-school stock job at a department store after soon after that.
She di it RIGHT. We need to look after Her and you all know why. The Anti's will want to crucify her.
Warm fuzzies all around.
It's not a good idea to mess with them westside gals. ;>)
Good shootin' grammy!
