Taliban return to Afghanistan's air waves

KANDAHAR, April 18

Taliban launched a clandestine radio station today, broadcasting anti-government commentaries and Islamic hymns from a mobile transmitter. Called "Shariat Shagh", or Voice of Shariat, after the station the Taliban ran while in power, the broadcast can be heard in five southern provinces.

"We launched the broadcast today through a mobile facility," said Taliban spokesman Abdul Latif Hakimi. "It goes on the air between six and seven o'clock in the mornings and same time in the evenings," he said by telephone from an undisclosed location. (Reuters) (Posted @ 14:20 PST)

Indonesia

Supporters of the Justice and Prosperity Party, an Islamist party that wants to establish Islamic Shariah law, staged anti-Israeli demonstrations in Jakarta and across Indonesia on 17 April 2005.

Tens of thousands of people participated in the march in Jakarta, which began at approximately 0700 local time (2400 UTC), and rallied at the U.S. Embassy. During the march, one side of the main road in the city's business district was blocked. No incidents of violence were reported.

Similar demonstrations took place in Surabaya in East Java, Jepara in Central Java, Makassar in South Sulawesi and Bandar Lampung in Sumatra.

The protest was organized to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians in view of perceived threats to al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. There is concern that right-wing Jews who oppose the evacuation of settlers from the Gaza Strip -- which is due to begin in July -- may undertake provocative actions on the Temple Mount, where al-Aqsa is located. This in turn has prompted calls by militant Palestinian groups for the Muslim world to protect the mosque.

Airport Evacuated (Springfield, MO)

Bomb squad notified after detectors go off

The Springfield-Branson Regional Airport was evacuated Monday afternoon around 3:15 PM after bomb detection equipment scored a hit on some luggage.
Airport director Gary Cyr and airport spokeswoman Sherry Wallace said detectors went off while screening a bag. Cyr said a second screening was also positive, forcing the airport to evacuate and call in the bomb squad.

Cyr said two passengers were removed from the plane and questioned by police. The flight was allowed to take off without the passengers or their bags, Cyr said. Cyr was not sure of its final destination.

Assistant airport direcotr Shawn Schroeder said bomb inpsectors were able to clear the scene and re-open the airport at 4:30 PM. Airport officials were busy getting caught up with a backlog of passengers.

Cyr said he did not recall this type of incident happening before.
