Insurgents Attack Abu Ghraib; Five Detainees Wounded

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, May 20, 2005 – Five detainees were wounded in an insurgent rocket attack on Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison today, military officials reported.
Three of the five had serious injuries.

The rocket landed in one of the internment facility's detainee compounds at about 10:15 a.m. U.S. forces quickly responded to defend the facility and safeguard the detainees, U.S. military officials said. The injured were immediately taken to the 115th Field Hospital.

Officials said no coalition forces were injured in the incident.

Also in Iraq, a 1st Corps Support Command soldier was killed in a vehicle accident after an improvised-explosive-device attack during a logistics patrol north of Taji today. The soldier was evacuated to a nearby medical facility, where he was pronounced dead. The name of the soldier is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

In other news, tips from Iraqi civilians in western Mosul led to the seizure of three weapons caches on May 19 by multinational forces, U.S. military officials announced.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment, discovered two weapons caches during separate search operations. The soldiers confiscated five artillery rounds, a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher, 12 grenades, and an automatic rifle.

Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, seized a large weapons cache during a cordon-and-search operation south of Mosul. The cache included 31 anti-tank mines, 22 grenades, 70 large machine gun rounds, 31 mortar rounds, and two smoke grenades.
