The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

27 die in Afghanistan mosque bombing

KANDAHAR (Afghanistan), June 1: A suicide attack on the funeral of a key anti-Taliban cleric on Wednesday killed at least 27 people, including one of Afghanistan’s top policemen and wounded 42 in the southern city of Kandahar. The blast ripped through a mosque in the centre of the city, the birthplace of the Taliban regime that was ousted by US-led forces three and a half years ago, as hundreds of mourners gathered inside.

The attack was the worst in Afghanistan this year and one of the most serious since the fall of the Taliban, which gave shelter and support to Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network. Afghan interior ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal told AFP that the police chief of Kabul, General Akram Khakraizwall, was among the dead.

“It was a suicide attack by the enemies of Afghanistan and Islam. The investigation into the case has started,” added Mashal. The bombing came as prayers were given for Maulvi Abdullah Fayyaz, a close supporter of US-backed President Hamid Karzai. Fayyaz was gunned down on May 29 after recently speaking out against fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Omar.

“Twenty-seven people were killed and 42 were injured and hospitalised,” the provincial governor, Gul Agha Shirzai, told reporters in Kandahar. The bomber had been identified as an Arab, based on documents including an identity card found on the remains of his body, he added. Arabs make up the bulk of the Al-Qaeda militants believed to remain in Afghanistan.

US unaware of Al Libbi’s extradition

WASHINGTON, June 1: The US State Department has said it cannot yet confirm Al Qaeda suspect Abu Faraj Farj Al Libbi has been extradited to the United States. President Pervez Musharraf said on Tuesday Pakistan had handed over the suspect, who is a Libyan citizen, to the Americans. US counter-terrorism agents have identified Al Libbi as Al Qaeda’s third-most important figure.

Asked if he could confirm whether the US had heard from Pakistan Al Libbi was going to be deported, extradited or transferred to the US, the spokesman, Richard Boucher, said: “We saw (President Musharraf’s) comments but the answer is no.” A State Department official, when contacted by Dawn on Wednesday to confirm Al Libbi’s extradition, said: “We still do not know.”

At an earlier briefing, Boucher said he was not aware of any move to bring Al Libbi to the United States. “I don’t think there is a formal process underway at this point.” He said the US authorities were in touch with the Pakistani government about Al Libbi but “where he ultimately ends up for trial or custody remains a question.”

Asked if Washington welcomes President Musharraf’s statement, Boucher said: “I am not going to start speculating on it. We will talk to the Pakistani government about these things first.”

Senate seeks probe into desecration of Quran

ISLAMABAD, June 1: The Senate on Wednesday unanimously passed a resolution condemning desecration of the Holy Quran by the US troops at the Guantanamo Bay prison and demanded an independent inquiry into the incident. Leader of the house Wasim Sajjad presented the resolution on behalf of all the members after a lengthy debate on the issue was completed.

“The Senate is deeply shocked at reported desecration of Holy Quran by the US army personnel at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre. This reprehensible act of the sacrilege has hurt sentiments of Muslims the world over,” Mr Sajjad said while reading out the resolution.

“The Senate condemns this deplorable act and demands that an immediate inquiry be conducted by an independent body, consisting of persons of unimpeachable integrity, to bring to justice the perpetrators of this shameful act.

“The Senate also condemns inhumane treatment meted out to detainees at the Guantanamo Bay (prison) who must be provided all the rights they are entitled to under the national and international law.”

Earlier, over 20 members belonging to the treasury and opposition benches took part in the debate on a motion moved by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed, seeking a discussion on the desecration incidents.

They condemned the US policies towards the Muslim world and said that desecration of Holy Quran by the US army personnel was a highly condemnable and serious crime. They called upon the US government to hold an independent and impartial inquiry through judges from the Muslim world.

Those who took part in the debate included parliamentary leader of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) in the Senate Ishaq Dar, Federal Minister for Health Mohammad Nasir Khan, Raza Mohammad Raza of the Pukhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party, Dr Abdullah Riar of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, opposition leader in the house Raza Rabbani and Sanaullah Baloch of the Balochistan National Party.

Instead, they choose to run with non-stories and fluff. We are still at war -- the next hit will come when and where we least expect it.

Not unless Michael Jackson or Paris Hilton is involved will it be reported. It's no wonder the internet is replacing both newspaper and television news.

I've yet to see a national or local newscast discussing supplies and preparation by the average person in the event of another attack on the US. If their city is attacked, they technically would have been derelict in their duty to have educated the public about potential threats to their safety. But then again, it's apparently not as newsworthy as whether or not a hotel heiress has a pre-nup (sarcasm).

‘JI trying to benefit from terrorist acts’

ISLAMABAD, June 1: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) MNA Kunwar Khalid Younus has criticized Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) for trying to get political advantage from the recent terrorist acts in Karachi. Talking to Dawn here on Wednesday, the MQM MNA said the JI had actually launched its campaign for the forthcoming local government elections by giving a strike call in Karachi.

Mr Younus regretted that instead of extending its cooperation to the provincial government in tracing the culprits, the JI gave a strike call. He said it was for the first time that a suicide bomber had been arrested. He expressed the hope that investigations with the injured terrorist would lead to masterminds behind the recent terrorist attacks in the country.

The MQM MNA said so far the government had only arrested the planners and executers of the terrorism plans and no mastermind had so far been nabbed.

Mr Younus also criticized the JI for holding the MQM responsible for the terrorists acts in Karachi. He said on one hand, the JI was accusing the MQM of carrying out terrorism and on the other hand, its own men had been arrested in the recent incident in which the Karachi corps commander survived an attempt on his life.

The MQM MNA said the sudden terrorist acts could lead to the postponement of the local government elections and it would benefit only the JI.

Thanks for the explanation. I had never seen photos even remotely like those, but I had never looked at any military archives or blogs. With the internet all things are possible. Still, it was surprising to find them posted on a jihadi site.

Both statements in that article were completely contradictory. "It's not Islam causing it," but "the more they go to Mosques, the more likely they will support terorrism".......huge what the h@((!

No, I still get the same impression, but the nose is wrong though, that one is a photograph and one is an artistic rendition of Rantisi. I thought that the graphic was reflecting that UBL is leading and/or supporting Hamas.

Security beefed up in Faisalabad

FAISALABAD, June 1: The district administration and police have heightened security here in the wake of terrorism wave across the country. Police commandos have been deployed at all sensitive places, including mosques, imambargahs and public places. Plainclothes men have been deputed inside mosques during prayer timings to keep a vigil on suspicious activities.

Closed-circuit televisions have been installed at the major mosques as well as busy commercial centres here.

The security has been enhanced at a meeting of the police officials, religious scholars and traders.

Chairing the meeting, DPO Muhammad Amin Wains stressed the need to reactivate peace committees at the police-station level to create a cordial atmosphere among the area people.

Special committees, comprising 15 members each, have been set up at police stations.

Meanwhile, Faisalabad Range DIG Sajjad Ahmad has asked the DPOs of Jhang, Toba Tek Singh and Faisalabad to disallow any unauthorized religious gathering in their respective areas.
