CIA overseeing three-day war game to mimic response to crippling Internet attack
WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA is conducting a war game this week to simulate an unprecedented, Sept. 11-like electronic assault against the United States.
The three-day exercise, known as “Silent Horizon,” is meant to test the ability of government and industry to respond to escalating Internet disruptions over many months, according to participants. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the CIA asked them not to disclose details of the sensitive exercise taking place in Charlottesville, Va., about two hours southwest of Washington.
The simulated attacks were carried out five years in the future by a fictional new alliance of anti-American organizations that included anti-globalization hackers. The most serious damage was expected to be inflicted in the closing hours of the war game Thursday.
The national security simulation was significant because its premise — a devastating cyberattack that affects government and parts of the economy on the scale of the 2001 suicide hijackings — contradicts assurances by U.S. counterterrorism experts that such effects from a cyberattack are highly unlikely.

WASHINGTON (AP)— Buying knockoff designer handbags and Hello Kitty T-shirts on city street corners may ultimately be helping terror groups like Hezbollah and Hamas, law enforcement officials and experts testified Wednesday.
Profits from faux Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Prada purses, scores of pirated DVD movies, and counterfeited clothing and other goods have been traced to supporters of terror organizations, the experts said.
“We have encountered suspects who have shown great affinity for Hezbollah and its leadership,” Lt. John Stedman of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department testified at a Senate Homeland Security Committee hearing.
In one example, Stedman said, a counterfeiting suspect had hung small Hezbollah flags and a picture of the group’s leader in his home. In another, the suspect had a Hezbollah tattoo on his arm.
Hezbollah’s terror capabilities equal those of al-Qaida, and “anything they do to fund their activities should be of our concern,” said terror expert Matthew Levitt, a former FBI intelligence official.
That is outrageous. It did not say a word about the Holy Bible or the Tanakh. WHat happened to No Laws governing the freedom of any religion. Something is very wrong in this country.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Virus authors are choosing not to create global epidemics--infections of the type caused by Melissa or Blaster--because that distracts them from their core business of creating and selling zombie networks, according to anti-virus experts.
Speaking at the AusCERT conference in Australia's Gold Coast on Tuesday, Eugene Kaspersky, founder of Kaspersky Labs, said that the influence of organized crime on the malware industry has led to a change of tactics. Instead of trying to create viruses and worms that infect as many computers as possible, malware authors are instead trying to infect 5,000 or 10,000 computers at a time to create personalized zombie armies.
"Do I need a million computers to send spam? No. To do a DDoS attack, 5,000 or 10,000 PCs is more than enough. That is why virus writers and hackers have changed their tactics of infection--they don't need a global epidemic," said Kaspersky.
Zombie networks are groups of computers that have been infected by malware that allows the author to control the infected PC and use it to send spam or launch DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks."
