Radio Host Fired For Wondering If Pope Went To Heaven

PITTSBURGH -- An evangelical Christian talk show host who questioned the beliefs of the Catholic church and entertained a caller's question about whether the late Pope John Paul II would go to heaven has been fired.

Marty Minto, 39, a senior pastor at a New Castle church, was fired Friday after three years as a host on WORD-FM in Pittsburgh. He said he was told that he was alienating listeners.

"As far as I'm concerned, I was doing what I've always done on the radio -- look at events around the world from a biblical perspective. I've always been willing to talk about controversial subjects," said Minto, who has had shows in Albany, N.Y., Denver and Phoenix.

Last week, Minto questioned some of the Catholic church's beliefs, such as purgatory, and fielded a question from a caller who asked whether the pope would go to heaven. Many evangelical Christians believe that someone must be a "born-again" believer to enter heaven.

Minto, who is also senior pastor of the 100-member Turning Point Community Church, said he told the caller that whether someone was born-again was personal and "between an individual and the Creator."

Chuck Gratner, general manager of WORD-FM, didn't dispute Minto's description and said he was let go because of differences in how he conducted his show.

"WORD-FM needs to function in this city in support of the entire church -- that means everybody -- and not focus on denominational issues," Gratner said.

I've never seen James Kennedy. I'll see if I can find on TV here in central Indiana.

Robert Tilton and Benny Hinn are probably the two worst ones on TV now. Benny Hinn has been exposed as a fake, hidden microphones and all.

It is not our business if the Pope got into heaven. That is for God alone to know. We'll find out if we get there. Of course, we think he should, but who are we to judge? We did not see into his soul...(but I'd put money on it!).

Catholic beliefs for dummies:

We believe that when you die one of three things can happen.

1. You were such a good person you go right to heaven.

2. You were so bad, with so many mortal and venial sins outstanding (like a bill you didn't pay, sins you didn't ask forgiveness for) you go straight to hell, do not pass purgatory, do not collect an air conditioner! or,

3, You go to purgatory. Purgatory is where you go to clean up your sins. (2nd grade perspective here: Purgatory is full of these huge stone bathtubs. People must sit there and scrub all their sins away. When they're cleaned up, they go to heaven). Also, grace will lesson your time there.

I know this is simplistic, but maybe its simplicity will help you understand it. I also don't think this was a good reason for firing this guy, unless part of the story got left out. If he maybe said Catholics won't go to heaven because they're not born again, then, yes, can him. Being a pastor doesn't make you God!

I worked with a girl that was raised catholic but didn't go to church anymore. She always said she was aiming for purgatory. She was living with her boyfriend at the time.

Everytime something like this happens the ACLU, and the christian haters like Act-up, Bill Maher, Ted Turner, and Jack Germond are smiling.

Saying to each other - "Look at the Stupid A** God lovers fighting & cutting each other up."

Of water (Baptism) and the Holy Spirit (Confirmation)

I'll tell that to the thief on the cross when I get to heaven! But, it's not worth arguing over, SQ....I know in Whom I have believed.

There are those who would say that none of those options ar biblically based. I for one.

BUT, MAJOR BUT HERE.....

I am not going to argue the about the basis of one's belief because there are so many of my faith system who I feel are also teaching ideas and doctrines I feel are not biblical.

The point is, does it really matter? We have our own lives and churches and faiths to clean up. Let's not tear each other down in the process. If I'm right and you're wrong, or if you're right and I'm wrong, we'll find out. If not here, then at the Judgement Seat of Christ.

The thief on the cross got his ticket from Jesus that day. I was just saying what Scripture said on the matter, and how it's done with the Sacraments in the Catholic Church.

Look for the "Coral Ridge Hour." That's where you'll find D. James Kennedy. He's excellent!

Thank you! I think it is so tacky when one faith disses another because their beliefs (style) are not the same. What is important is that we do believe!

Is a false teacher who makes himself our father saved?

I wonder.

That is salvation by works, not grace.

Well, we are commanded to "contend for the faith once delivered to the saints."

You are not doing that if you do a cop-out that "well, maybe I am wrong so I will be accepting of your views."

I'm sorry, but I went to your webpage and see that there would be very little we agree on, based on your beliefs about the Pope and my church. You won't change my mind, and I won't try to change yours.

This is another incidence of theology coming into play in the marketplace. Evangelicals simply do not believe that the Catholic Church can lead people to salvation.
