(FORT BRAGG) - A sergeant on trial for a grenade attack at an Army camp in the Kuwait desert days before the Iraq invasion wrote in his diary before he was deployed about killing fellow soldiers.
An FBI agent read four passages from Sergeant Hasan Akbar's computer diary Thursday.
Akbar wrote about making the choice to kill Iraqis, whom he called his Muslim brothers, or "my battle buddies."
He said in one passage that if the Army left him at Fort Campbell and didn't try to humiliate him, he wouldn't do anything.
But the passage ended by saying that if he was sent to Iraq, he would "try to kill as many of them as possible."
Akbar is charged with two counts of first degree murder and is eligible for a death sentence.
Prosecutors said the diary entries show he planned to kill soldiers and that his actions warrant a death sentence.
That's a darn good question. I doubt we'll ever know what went on in his mind (and it wouldn't be a pretty picture if we could see it).
Half or more of military members join/reup for signing bonuses, technical education, and college funding when they get out. There's a ton of them who were horribly disillusioned when they realized "My God! I'm actually going to a combat zone and into harm's way!"
Pretty hard reality check, indeed.
He won't get it. America no longer has the guts.
Evil and stupid.
See post #36. It was real. It was NOT a myth. Of course, it WILL NOT BE well-documented.
I WISH the death sentence for it would be....a cell the size of a tent...kept dark...with an opening large enough to roll a grenade into that cell.
I've said it BEFORE, I'll say it AGAIN.....it's a SHAME that this thing lived to see this trial.
The worst thing about this guy is that they can only hang him once.
That's a pretty negative assessment, that half or more don't even consider the possibility of combat. My generation has seen the military sent to various places of combat, including the Gulf, of course. My brother was in the Navy for six years, also nuclear subs, and continues in the reserves, during which time he has been sent to the dangerous places. How can you live in today's world and think being in the military = sitting around in the states and looking forward to college money?
I saw an 'ask the imam' somewhere, (sorry didn't keep the link) where the muslim asked the imam if it was acceptable for a muslim member of the US defence forces to go to Iraq.
Only if you don't kill muslims, the imam replied.
Draw your own conclusions.

They are right about that. I am not going to do anything about it as long as I stay here. But as soon as I am in Iraq, I am going to try and kill as many of them as possible." from his diary.
sounds like he meant it to me and thats a british point of view, the guys needs to be punished big time, as an ex british army medic all i can say is he would have been coming home from iraq in a box if he had done it in our camp
