Clerk Not Likely To Be Charged, Officials Say

FORT LAUDERDALE -- A liquor store became a crime scene Tuesday night after a clerk shot a teen who police said tried to steal a woman's purse.

According to police, Barbara Winters, 70, was opening her car door outside a Fort Lauderdale liquor store when Steven Wendal, 15, snatched her purse and took off.

The Story In Pictures: Alleged Victim: 'He Deserves To Be Shot At'

That's when the store clerk, Kingsly Brown, shot Wendal, police said. "I really was in shock. I commended him for using that kind of resolve to protect a customer," Winters said.

"He deserves to be shot at. He is a kid. He is a stupid kid. Kids do stupid things. He deserves to be shot at."

Wounded, Wendal raced a mile and a half through neighborhoods, knocking on doors for help. His trail of blood stopped on Kathleen Rouse's porch.

"I didn't know what to think. I was shocked and he wanted me to take him to the hospital and I said, 'No, I will call 911.' And he said, 'It's going to take too long for them to get here,'" Rouse said. The 911 call led police to arrest Wendal.

Although Wendal was not armed when Brown shot him, police said the clerk might not be charged. "We don't have a final say on that but we don't anticipate charges," Veda Coleman-Wright, of the Broward Sheriff's Office, said.

Winters said she is fine, until she tells her son what happens. "My son is going to kill me. What the guy didn't do last night, my son is going to do big time today," Winters said.

Winters said she will not go to liquor stores at 8 p.m. any more. But, she said she is not stressed out and is just a little tired from her ordeal, which lasted until 2 a.m. Wednesday.

Wendal, who was shot in the shoulder, recovered enough from his wound to appear in juvenile court Wednesday, where he was taken into custody on strong-arm robbery charges.

You would put your remote in the purse. :-)

I'd slap you silly if I wasn't already busy calling Feminazi Headquarters to put out a contract on you.

But I think shooting a kid over a purse, is pushing it.

I guarantee you that when/if you get robbed, you will wish you had a gun to kill the sob. You feel violated. I could have shot him but would have been mid torso then head.

"I guarantee you that when/if you get robbed, you will wish you had a gun to kill the sob. "

No doubt. But if I did kill the sob, I would probably regret it once I cooled down. Feeling angry or violated doesn't justify putting a bag full of possessions over a human life. And it doesn't make it right.

Yes the perp should be brought to justice. Appointing yourself executioner because of petty theft is not justified.

What is the percentage of purse grabbers that get caught? 5 percent 7 percent. I doubt if it ever gets over 10 percent anywhere. People are injured, lose money for medications, food, rent, etc so some little sh*t can buy some dope. I repeat, I could do it.

Now there is a vision that will keep a fellow awake at night. Those are some mean motor scooters.

I could do it, meaning I could shoot the little perp, not steal a purse.

No one has the right to steal without impunity, where do you draw the line on theft? Had it been a $100k would it have been justified in your mind? Why do you think they have armed gaurds in banks? It is to stop thieves, they don't care how much a person stole, they are there to protect it. It is bleeding hearts like you that enable these punks.

How bout if it was just a pack of gum? Would you kill the teenager over a pack of gum?

Probably if he tried to take it by force, thats the real crime here, not the monetary value. I have absolutely no no respect for anyone that would impose themselves like this on another human being. The punk got what he deserved.

Thanks for your voices of reason. Some of these "kill without thinking" types are pretty scary.

I'm just a conservative, pro-gun, pro-death penalty (for murderers) guy who will probably get banned for thinking that a 15-year-old kid who steals a purse deserves jail, not death.
