My Norton is driving me nuts
April 14, 2005 | pbrown

I've had to uninstall and then reinstall my Norton Internet Security 2004, a total of four times in the last two weeks. I am at my wits end, which for me, isn't too far a journey. Any help on what could possibly be wrong would be greatly appreciated.

Some internet server providers (browser??)are not compatible with Norton and or McVee. I had to disable certain safety functions within my firewall (McVee) before I could navigate on the web. Possibly the identity protection function may have to be disabled before you can navigate the web.

2004. It seems to run okay but after reading these posts I'm starting to wonder.

I've used AVG for years, but lately I've learned that the folks in the know prefer Avast or AntiVir, both of which are also freeware antivirus programs. AntiVir seems to have the edge. I just replaced AVG with it on one virus-ridden pc, like it so far, haven't put it on the others just yet.

Mine has worked flawlessly, I think it's the latest version.

I have no dog in this fight. I have Norton installed on one home machine and AVG on another. At work I have an enterprise version of MacAfee, version 7, I believe. My daughter has Trend. They all work.

I got Norton for my home computer because, at the time i got it, it was the only one that fully integrated with Outlook Express. It scanns incoming and outgoing mail.

Recently I upgraded it to version 2005. I was hesitant because CPU magazine had dongraded it for compatibility issues. I disabled the Norton firewall during installation because I use ZoneAlarm (Windows 2000, not XP).

I have no complaints about this installation, but I insatlled on a new XP machine for my boss and ran into firewall problems. It seemed to be blocking automatic updates for another program. This is never a problem with ZoneAlarm, because it always tells you what it is doing and offers alternatives in clear English.

while norton is without doubt the best virus program it does have some serious bugs with installing and uninstalling. i recommend to my customers to install ONLY the anti-virus and leave internet security and systemworks alone. XP SP2 gives you a software firewall and if you are using a router that is more the sufficent for 95% of internet users. if norton has hosed your system you may need to track-down and delete all "hidden" temporary files and delete every reference to symantec and norton in your system registry as well as all norton and symantec folders on your computer before re-installing just the anti-virus.

"I don't like Mcafee at all - I only used it a few months and I couldn't stand it."

That's why I suggested others also. It's one of those "what works best for you" senarios. I work for a computer company and have seen very few computers that Norton actually worked on without problems.

By the same token I have seen very few that Mcafee did not work well with. And all of these cases were when Mcafee had their heads up their arses when it came to listening to the general public. That changed about the middle of last year and I have yet seen a problem associated with Mcafee,

However Nortons is a constant headache. But like anything else, if it works for you, stick with it. Nortons biggest problem by far, at least in my opinion, is when the company was sold and Norton(The software designer) no longer had anything to do with the company.

The year he sold the company they used an ad with Fidel Castro on their webpage which told me all I needed to know.

I have to agree with MetalHeadConservative35's post:

"3 letters for you,
AVG
2 more words for you
NORTON SUCKS"

I used to have Norton and had nothing but headaches and software conflicts.

A FReeper mentioned AVG and I downloaded the free version. It scans my Email and my PC and offers no software conflicts.

I'm on a cable service, so I don't use the Norton firewall portion of their software - because I don't have to - and my ISP recommended that I don't because it conflicts with theirs. That might be something else you could check.

My auto updates run perfectly - and I have it set for a weekly scan automatically. I've never had any problems.

MacAfee is not that good - so I agree with RedWing9 regarding that software. And .. my son is a computer professional - he hates MacAfee.

I ran NIS 2004 until SP2 came out. The double firewall was irritating to say the least. If you want to keep NIS 2004, disable one of the firewalls.

PS - I dumped NIS 2004 for NAV & SP2 firewall. Happy camper now. And loading and unloading demo programs as I do, the SP2 firewall keeps up pretty good.

Norton's advice line told me to log into their web page and download a fix. Idiots.

Same here. I had to uninstall and reinstall two times yesterday. I have so many corrupted files. It said something bad about my windows XP but I didn't catch it. Everything is crazy on this end with this thing. If it wasn't for wanting to come to FR, I'd toss this thing that likes to make an idiot of me.

Well .. my son is a computer professional and he says MacAfee is JUNK.

Since he takes components and builds my computer from scratch for me - I think I'll stick with his opinion .. especially since Norton has done a really good job keeping viruses out of my system. I do not use their firewall though because my cable ISP provides one for me already.

Numerous viruses target Norton right off the bat. As always, the only really good method is to format and reinstall everything. Sorry.

Norton's best feature is the uninstall function.

I have become proficient at that lately. What a headache.
