Completely uninstall Norton Internet Security and throw away the CDs (it's a resource pig, plus it's not the best to say the least).
Get TREND MICRO or Kapersky or Sybari
NO..I'm talking about the virus protector. When you first buy it, it needs to update ALOT. So it might do it in portions instead of all at once.....
Sorry .. I have downloaded Service Pack 2 and I have not had any problems. And .. I downloaded it several months ago so if I was going to have problems they certainly would have manifested by now.
However, I unloaded Norton - installed the Service Pack and then reinstalled Norton. No problems.
AVG

NORTON SUCKS
Beautifully stated. AVG is the best AV software on the planet, and it's free for personal use. I ran it side by side with Norton and McAfee in a test. AVG consistently caught and fixed virii that the others either missed altogether, or found but declared unfixable.

"Also .. Whenever I delete or add any software - I always run defrag. I've found it makes the transition to new software much easier and less problematic. After I delete the software - I run defrag - then after I reinstall the software - I run defrag."
In addition to that, the later versions of Windows disk cleanup are more powerful than they used to be, and do a pretty good job of ditching junk that can slow the system and hide malware. Ccleaner ( google it ) is more powerful, but be warned, its default clean will get your cookies, so don't run it before unchecking that entry in the options.
Windows registry is notorious for bogging down the system with extraneous entries... there are several registry cleaners that I have used, regseeker ( google again ) my current favorite, but again be warned- if you goof the registry you may have to reinstall everything.
Sometimes it is faster and easier to reformat the drive and reinstall everything.
One other thing I do everyday is remove all the cookies I have accumulated that day.
Click on Start - run - it should show "cookies" highlighted - click OK - it will give you a window showing all the cookie documents. Click on Edit - select all - all the items will be highlighted in the window.
Hold down your Ctrl key and move your cursor over the "index" file which is at the top of the list of cookies - the highlight should disappear. The reason you need to do this is because the system will not allow you to delete that file.
Click File - delete - and all the cookies will disappear.
Close the window - then right click on your trash can and delete all the items in the trash can.
If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask. If I don't know the answer - I can always check with my son.
Thanks. I just don't understand why Norton would start acting up after all this time. Something must be getting to it through their updates. I've taken too many aspirins because of them.
I only have one firewall, NIS. NIS worked well when I first bought it, but now...
LOLOLOL. Why did Clinton whiz pass in my mind...
LOLOL. You're joking? Right? Your joking? I get it, your having fun at my vunerable expense. You had me going for a minute. You are joking? Right?
If you are running the SP2 ungrade, it also has a running firewall. Neither firewall yields to the other, but they are both configurable. Turn one off.
But I wasn't happy with that option either. I dumped NIS2004 completely. I run the SP2 firewall now and NAV with daily updates.
This works for me.
Good luck and hope your ordeal is over soon. :-)
Because it would look good with the sun reflecting off it. :-)
My computer constantly restarts on me. My Norton constantly wants to update a new virus protection about the time I want to FReep.
Our computers ARE alike. Mine restarts too, and the virus updates come at the most inopportune times.
It's not the Sassy virus, I think that's it's name, or maybe it's sassor? Well anyhow, they sent me a disk months ago to run, everything was fine. I guess we have ghost in our machine. It's true...misery does love company. You and your machine are always welcome in my world. :-)
Is that the same as dial-up? I live in the country, DSL doesn't come out this far. Shoot, they even have to pump in sunshine where I live from time to time.
AVG Pro
Thanks. I'm through with Norton.
$33.00, my hubby will more than agree to that if it means he gets to retain control over the tv remote. I have him right where I want him...I lose this computer, he loses the remote. LOL
From your mouth to God's ear.
Thanks for the laugh. BTW, I'm a she. I think only men name their...

Get AVG, it's free, simple and ACTUALLY works!
Since they know they have a problem, I don't see why they can't fix it.
If interested here is the site.
Thank you. I'll check it out.
So I've missunderstood two posters. My bad. Sorry. But, hubby is a commando when needs be. :-)
