Student Claims He Was Suspended For Wearing Makeup

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- A ninth-grade student has accused officials at a Southern California high school of discrimination for suspending him for wearing lipstick and eye makeup.

James Herndon, 16, said the five-day suspension imposed Monday by administrators at San Bernardino's Pacific High School was unfair because females are allowed to wear cosmetics on campus.

"If I can't wear makeup," he said, "then the girls or the staff can't wear makeup."

Herndon says his black lipstick and red eye makeup express the Wiccan religious beliefs he shares with his mother, a priestess in the neo-pagan faith. The suspension violates his constitutional right to free expression, he contends.

Linda Hill, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino City Unified School District, declined to comment on the case, citing student confidentiality laws.

She said, however, that students shouldn't wear excessive makeup or clothing that could conceal their identity or be distracting to other students, a prohibition applied to male and female students alike.

Herndon, who is repeating his second year at the school, has worn makeup since he enrolled, according to his mother, Valerie Wallace.

Despite the suspension, Herndon plans to wear the makeup when he returns to school next week.

"My son shouldn't change the way he is," Wallace said.

It would seem you are trying to co-opt this thread to make a personal statement; why don't you just say it and get it over with?

I dunno. From the sidelines it looks like the argumentation is pretty thin for both teams, lacking in meat, as it were.

It's easy to make molotov cocktails and pretend you're an effective military presence.

It's when the boys with the neutron bombs show up that everyone realizes that this is just window dressing.

How's the job?

"Wicca only knows good and evil, not the personification of either."

If that is the case "wicca" is wrong.

Our Lord Jesus Christ is the personification of good.

Matthew 13:36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. 37 He answered and said unto them, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 38 The field is the world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked one;

Christianity is the following of Christ's example. It stems from Judaism. Satan comes from ealy biblical times, beginning with genisis.
The sun worshipers (Zoroastrians) had nothing to do with it at the time, as they didn't exist.(they stem from Persians in the Iran region) Perhaps you should read better material, rather than stuff on web sites which likes to confuse the faiths and run them into each other. Your ignoring about 5,000 years of history.

It's a cult and fits the very definition of Cult.

Careful with that. Techinically, Catholicism fits the definition of a "cult".

MINORS DO NOT HAVE RIGHTS !!!

Sure they do. See my post #33.

For amplification, check this 1995 case, from which I've taken the following brief excerpt (I've provided an internal link to Tinker, which you should also read):

[W]hile children assuredly do not "shed their constitutional rights . . . at the schoolhouse gate," ">Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School Dist., 393 U.S. 503, 506 (1969), the nature of those rights is what is appropriate for children in school.

So is your claim that we cease to have freedom of religion when somebody can say "that's not a religion."

Oh crap, time to round up my Christian vegetarian friends!

I know some who have Satan as their highest priest.

And those people are called Satanists, not Wiccans. BIG difference, might as well be calling Christians Muslims. I've never actually met a Satanist.

Why else do you think they spike their hair into horns, sharpen their teeth into fangs, etc?

That's just individuals being strange. Yes, I know Christians who do this too.

The fact is, it's a cult. there is no central book (of spells), a "church", a clergy, etc.

No central church or Clergy. Does Christianity have that? They can't even agree on what's the right central book. I guess they're a cult. They even fit many dictionary definitions of a cult.

It would seem you are trying to co-opt this thread to make a personal statement;

Please read from the beginning. It's an attempt by a fundie Christian to co-opt the thread into an anti-Wiccan crusade that I responded to.

It stems from Judaism. Satan comes from ealy biblical times, beginning with genisis.

And when was Genesis written? And do you have proof that it was not edited later to include this concept? Hint: it was later edited to reconcile the early polytheistic beliefs with the more modern monotheistic beliefs.

Oh..... I see now.

As long as someone CLAIMS that their beliefs are a religion, then it IS a religion, eh? And, if another person should have the audacity to say that something is NOT a religion (God forbid that anyone should use their first amendment rights here), then we have lost our freedom of religion?

Doublespeak from the Ministry of Love.

Fatuous, false, and poorly crafted. Keep trying, though.

And you are right. Christianity is not really a religion either. It's a following. "Religion" is one of those words that have been abused over time.

Being a "following" brings it even closer to cult status. Cults usually have one leader who knows all, his minions following him blindly, adhering to every word.

Sorry, your strawman argument fails on so many levels it's not worth continuing.
You obviously have a Jesus phobia, no understanding of Christianity whatsoever, nor do you have any knowledge of history.
If you know soeone claiming to be a christian who puts horns on their head and sharpens their teeth into fangs, I suggest to you that this person is not a Christian. I doubt that you know of such a person however. In fact, it seems you know little, if anything at all.

Exactly.

And, if another person should have the audacity to say that something is NOT a religion

He can say it all he wants, sounding as ignorant as he wants. But that idea can NEVER be put into actual practice or enforcement while retaining freedom of religion. Unfortunately, people like him will be on city councils and zoning committees, enforcing their hatred. Politicians like Bob Barr will try to stop Wiccans from freely practicing their religion with equal rights as Christians.

Read 59 first. It's only an exercise to show what ignorance would look like on the other side. No actual slight intended.

Re post 74.

A stupid statement. Everyone is cultist in one way or another then.
If you follow the laws, you are a cultist. That's what you are saying.

And where ever do you get this canaibalism stuff from? What kind of idiotic teacher raised you?
