> there are times when even a healthy Jewish person is required by halacha to forfeit his or her life -- most famously, when preserving life would entail the performance of an act of idol-worship...
Ummm... what?
Unless I'm reading this wrong, it's suggesting that it's ok to suicide-bomb (or something similar) Jews who may be about to worship a golden calf or some such. Is my interpretation wrong here?
Considering that it's an excellent column, why the "Jewsweek" in the link, which has a pejorative ring?
Sorry about that: I see there really is a magazine called Jewseek, and that you weren't making a pun on Newsweek!
Euthenasia: the welfare mentality taken to it's logical conclusion.
The court won, the legislature and executive lost. Till Terri's death, this may have been in question. No longer.
I spoke to an 87yo. who told me he'd gladly take pills to end his life, if only someone could give them to him, as his life was too much work preserving. I told him it's spring, a time of life that he shouldn't be harboring such thoughts.
Over the years we've traded places kicking one-another's arses, and this time I think I succeeded, as he's still hanging in there. Three strokes haven't sent Manny to the rest home. Perhaps it's selfish of me to want him to carry on, but a twenty year relationship is hard to give up. And over all these years, we've never agreed upon anything politically. Imagine that. He hated Bush, I hated Clinton.
I thought I could spot a phony politician, but interactions with Manny taught me that phoney is par for the course for most politicians. Protecting our labor and protecting our markets ranks high among democrats.
