Jakarta, Detikcom - On Wednesday, Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla asked people living in area near of mount of Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa) and Tangkuban Perahu to prepare from being evacuated. The VP announcement released as the danger level has been raised to level III on both volcanoes.
''We asked them to get ready, to be aware, but please don't be panic,'' said Kalla in his office in Jakarta. He added that the government would ask or order them to evacuate when the situation has reached level IV (four). ''They have to be evacuated when the level has reach IV. All the villagers have to leave both areas,'' Kalla told reporters.
Despite make hopes that the disaster wouldn't happen, Kalla said the government has to make preparation for the bad. ''We can deny the fact that the same disaster had been taken place before. We will do the best to prepare for all possibilities,'' Kalla said.
Kalla also said that he already gave order to the volcanic and geophysics disasters mitigating agency to intensify their effort in monitoring both volcanic mountains. ''I have also ordered the volcanic mitigating agency to sent their officer to Jakarta to provide detail on volcanic information to the public,'' Kalla said, referring to the agency headquarters in Bandung, West Java. © sss
Interesting. Surely this is related to the recent mega-earthquake in the region.
Highly likely as both the volcanoes and earthquakes in that region are caused by the same geologic forces.
Ping to You. :-)
I really think the headline on this doesn't match the text.
Tangkuban Perahu is an active volcano not too far from Bandung, West Java. There are a lot of people living right in that area, including several acquaintances of mine. Let us hope this does not become another disaster.
With 125+ active and dormant volcanoes Indonesia at any given moment usually has 1-2 erupting and another half-dozen rumbling; what was odd the last few months was none at all, really.
All of the various volcanoes either erupting or having seismic activity (Talang, Anak Krakatau, and Tangkuban) have a history small eruptions fairly often.
???
That's pretty much what the first line of the story says.
"Jakarta, Detikcom - On Wednesday, Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla asked people living in area near of mount of Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa) and Tangkuban Perahu to prepare from being evacuated."
Since it seems to be a translated article, that may be what is causing your confusion.
The emphasis on "disaster" is a bit misleading. The guy was talking about being prepared for all eventualities, but both volcanoes in question have repeatedly had small, non-disastrous eruptions.
I think a lot of recent articles quoting Indonesians haven't been accurately capturing the gist of what they're trying to say.
Well, if the eruptions wouldn't cause a 'disaster', then why bother evacuating?
Maybe the headline should have read 'potential disaster'.
I understood the content and context just fine.
That, in turn, was created where formerly had stood the "landbridge" between Sumatra and Java ~ that's back when they were still one island.
That's the explosion that appears to have been a "cause" of the economic collapse that brought about the Dark Age beginning in 538 AD.
Krakatoa may also have small explosions from time to time, but over the last few thousand years it's had more than it's fair share of big, Earthshattering, civilization destroying hum dingers.
Then there's Mt. Hekla in Iceland. Isn't even a sign of people living there before it's discovery in the 900s! Actually, there's no sign of anything living there before then either. That's the volcano suspected of bringing on the so-called "Greek Dark Age" back in the BCE period.
We should all pray that Krakatoa does not explode.
