A Florida couple was treated after being bitten by hundreds of bed bugs during a vacation cruise on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, according to Local 6 News.

Alan and Nathalie Wasserstorm said their vacation aboard the Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas was ruined by the infestation of bed bugs.

"I was in such disbelief at first, you know, I mean, it was hundreds and hundreds of bugs, we had leaned against all the night before, I mean it literally made my skin crawl," Alan Wasserstorm said.

The couple moved to another room on the ship but it was too late, according to the report.

OK, CH, I'll bite. What's reason #1 you won't go on a cruise ship? ;-)

And the wife wonders why I won't go on a cruise.

Seems like there is always something happening on these things.

Food poisoning, Legionaire's Disease, and now bedbugs.

"DNA, noun, dioxyribonucleic acid........ just became a verb."

Somehow, Bert, I'm thinking that I won't be getting a gold star for that one. :-(

But does it count that studying DNA and RNA in Biology was one of my favorite parts of class? Dissecting smelly sharks I did NOT like. :-)

The potential claims might be covered by some treaty -- don't laugh -- that might limit damages. The company should have settled with them confidentially for ten times their ticket price -- it would have been a bargain. They just lost millions in publicity and (probably) bookings.

I refuse to sit on Motel bedspreads. No one knows the last time they were cleaned. Mostly the sheets can be assumed to have been washed.

I used to go on a yearly cruise on Royal Caribbean. Have been everywhere and always thought that the ships were very clean and that it was a great way to travel.

After 9/11 I swore off cruising..in my mind that would be the perfect place for terrorists to infect a large group of people who then leave and go to all parts of the country and infect other people. Now I KNOW I'll never take another cruise with this story.

I hope by the time their lawsuit is all done. RC just has a few rowboats left.

Yes. In fact in many cases, depending on the type of fabric used, and its colorfastness, some hotels don't like to wash the spreads too often, as they will then fade more quickly--and the spreads are expensive replacement items (when having to do so on a large/more frequent scale.)

And travel experts say that one of the easiest protection from cooties in a hotel is to put a baggie over the TV clicker--although I have yet to do it myself. Next time.

My parents told stories about a rented furnished house that came complete with bed bugs. They hauled the mattress and springs out into the yard and burned them.

Yes, estrogen. And I know people who love to cruise (including my brother,) and I think I should say that I have never taken one--I just haven't had the interest--except maybe a Norwegian Cruise Lines cruise in the fjords. :-)

I'm just having fun with this *bug bulletin*. :-)

And the second part of your post is something to definately to consider.

Jetsam is what sinks to the bottom when a ship breaks up, and conversely, flotsam is what floats.

I have a few ancestors who were bigtime mariners.

ick! I was munched on by bed bugs once - but it was while staying in a $12 a night hostel in Florence, and fortunately didn't happen until my last night there. I can't fathom how a cruise line that charges $2800 could allow its beds to become infested with bugs.

Now I lay me down to sleep,

Where the grey back lice and bedbugs creep,

If I should die before I wake,

Who the hell's gonna spend my stake?
