Schiavo's 'Dr. Humane Death' Got 1980 Diagnosis Wrong By Jeff Johnson CNSNews.com Senior Staff Writer April 12, 2005

(CNSNews.com) -- A neurologist hired by Michael Schiavo to confirm that his wife Terri was in a persistent vegetative state said he was "105 percent sure" of that diagnosis, but Dr. Ronald Cranford expressed similar certainty about a patient he examined in 1980 who later regained both consciousness and the ability to communicate.

Three days before Terri Schiavo's death, Cranford appeared on the MSNBC talk program, "Scarborough Country," to discuss her condition. Cranford was interviewed by reporter Lisa Daniels.

Absolutely. Then, when all else failed, they'd opus out, decrying alleged "incivility"--when they, themselves, were some of the least civil on the threads.

Interesting links.

I too refused to check off the box on my driver's license that gives "consent" for organ donation.

I don't oppose all organ donation. But I stopped buying into the donation industry's feel-good slogans about "giving the gift of life" after I found out how such "consent" can be abused.

Did you know that in Washington, D.C., transplant procedures can be initiated on a patient who has NOT designated "consent for donation" on a driver's license, and whose family has NOT yet been contacted?

Washington Post: In D.C., Consent Not Required Before Transplant Preparation

When a gas pipe exploded at an Arlington construction site on Nov. 4, Juan Mancia took the brunt of the blast. The 20-year-old's heart stopped while he was being helicoptered to Washington Hospital Center, where he was declared dead upon arrival at 11:36 that morning.

At that moment, Mancia crossed the line from patient to potential organ donor. And at that moment, because of an unusual and controversial District law, surgeons converged on Mancia -- a man who had never consented to organ donation -- and started to prepare his kidneys for transplantation...

--Washington Post,"Demand for Organs Fosters Aggressive Collection Methods: In D.C., Consent Not Required Before Transplant Preparation," 11/24/97 (source)

More about the same patient, Juan Mancia, from "ABC Good Morning America," 11/25/97:

CHARLES GIBSON, Host: A controversial Washington, DC, law on organ donation is in the spotlight following the death of a construction worker.

After a man named Juan Mancia (ph) was killed [sic - article does not state whether Mr. Mancia had been found to be brain dead] in an accident, his wife found doctors had performed a surgical procedure to preserve his kidneys for transplantation, even though she had not authorized it, and he had never signed an organ donor card.

Now, Washington's the only place in the country with a law in use that allows doctors to prepare organs for transplantation without the family's consent.

Supporters say it is necessary to increase the supply of desperately needed organs. Critics say the law violates fundamental rights... (source)

This case got publicity only because Mr. Mancia's wife objected to what the doctors had done, and because Mr. Mancia was a foreign national.

Are you suggesting that the document on Terri's discharge is a fake?

Wow - I knew the WPPFF was an obnoxious group, but I had no idea they had Freepmailed Terri supporters.

I'd be interested to know if this was brought to the attention of Judge Greer prior to his rulings.

LOL! Greer uses every piece of evidence that he doesn't agree with for toilet paper.

Thank you for posting the Article. It just shows how very wrong one opinion can be re: brain damage. I do feel that Cranford thinks little of his patients (and God help anyone who is his patient)who are not "normal" and diagnosis is not his forte for sure. Just watching the videos of Terri was so very disturbing. She followed the balloon, opened her eyes when asked and even opening them wider at one point. How anyone can suggest that this was reflect is an idiot and had another agenda. Pray you never become part of that agenda. If you are alive inside and its to very hard and it takes sometimes YEARS for your brain to reteach those areas that are destroy, but it happens. I am convinced that Terri was alive, knew what
was going on around her and to me this was nothing less than horrific. To the Law she was the legal property of her so called husband who lied to the insurance company. He did not have her best interest in mind and Felos, a creep in his own right was doing MS evil bidding, and then there is Judge Greer, the one person who could have stopped this animal from doing away with Terri. He chose to listen to MS and pro death Dr.s never considering the person Terri was or her well being. To rule endlessly against the parents who wanted to care for her is just beyond belief. She didnt have a progressive illness, even tho MS tried to make it so by slapping her in a nursing home with no light, no therapy. The only light in her life came from her parents and those who loved her. Terri was murdered and we got to watch and witness this atrocity.

It's actually a legit question -- judges don't research that stuff themselves, and rely on the parties to bring the information to their attention. Sometimes, after a case, a whole bunch of stuff comes out that was never presented in court.

Thanks for the ping.

I hope that this tragic case causes a serious evaluation of the dangerous euthanasia road this country is traveling down.

Just some of what I found in my research, it is much worse than just lack of consent:

In Billings, Montana, a 2-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital, a victim of child abuse.[9)] He was moving and breathing. An attempt was made to intubate him but he resisted too much. He was given a large dose of morphine, but still he resisted too much. Then he was given a large dose of phenobarbital, but he continued resisting too much. Finally, he was paralyzed with pancuronium, which eliminated all resistance to intubation. The criteria for brain death in that community included recording brain waves on two separate occasions. Also, it required that no drugs be present that could interfere with the test. Brain waves were recorded only once and at the time the determination of brain death was made, a therapeutic -level of phenobarbital was still in his blood. He was pronounced dead and taken to the operating room where his kidneys were removed for transplantation.

In Libertyville, Illinois, accident victim who was clinically dead for more than nine hours coughed while preparations were made to remove his kidneys." In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, [13] as they were preparing to take the organs from a man who had suffered a heart attack, someone noticed a blink of his eye. In Nashville, Tennessee, [14] as they prepared to take the liver, the man moved his right foot.

In Harbor City, California, in 1988, a 20-year-old man was found unconscious on the street.([0)] He was taken to an emergency room where he was pronounced brain dead within a few hours. Multiple organs were taken for transplantation, including heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, femur, patella and Achilles tendon. This was done without notification of his relatives and obviously without permission from them or much less the young man himself. Some expressed concern and/or genuine upset by this action. The answer given by some was that it was within the law (the UAGA) to do this. It is within the law of every state for this to occur. Furthermore, the newspaper account stated that cocaine and alcohol were found by tests that were carried out. Both drugs can interfere with brain function and the evaluation of absence of brain function. But questions are moot for this patient after his beating heart has been excised.

A BIG bump.

And on the day of Terri's death (which occured early in the morning,) I made note late that evening of the very odd DERTH of offers, on Free Republic, among the WPPFF leaders and members, of prayers for Terri's family [or friends] on her passing. Or even, for that matter, offers for Terri to rest in peace, which would be so very basic and effortless and decent.

This was the case, even though many of the leaders and members were posting throughout the day on the Terri, and Terri's passing, threads, as well as (thier) posting eslewhere on the board. I did notice one of the WPPFF members, who is a friend of mine, who posted "God rest her soul," after I made note on the board of my observation on the odd DERTH of offers to Terri from the WPPFF.

The WPPFF signed their official Manifesto with this:

"The WPPFF, aka The Wild Turkeys, aka the Coalition of the Sane."

The bolding of the word *Sane* is mine, and is to call attention to the signing of their official Manifesto with the use of that word...and that word being their last stated word (and, as I mentioned, in signature.)

I will leave it to all on FR to determine the intent and implication of distinction of the used term, and the grouping and capitalizing of the stated, official designation and signation "Coalition of the Sane".

And kcvl, thank you for posting this article.

Great links. Thanks.

Interesting and alarming that according to your source, it is legal in "every state" to remove organs for transplantation without permission from the either the donor or his/her family!

From your source:

[Removal of the young man's organs] was done without notification of his relatives and obviously without permission from them or much less the young man himself. Some expressed concern and/or genuine upset by this action. The answer given by some was that it was within the law (the UAGA) to do this. It is within the law of every state for this to occur.

(I take it that "UAGA" is the "Uniform Anatomical Gift Act," though I haven't researched that "Act" yet.)

This would seem to contradict the sources I posted --that only in the District of Columbia were such practices legal, at least as of 1997. The incident you quoted took place in 1988.

It used to upset me to no end the way the Terri haters would do their best to get on the first bump to the top of the next group of comments. And they would interject themselves right in the middle of our heart-felt prayers and comments as we were trying to save Terri. It was disgusting but not a surprise anymore. They hate pro lifers and Christians. It's a game with them. Spread the word: Ignore them or post a prayer in response. But the problem is that they engage each other back and forth to try and shut us down. Whatever.

I am stating that almost every piece of "evidence" used by the Schindler supporters is worthless. There is no argument used based upon anything but emotion and hysteria fueled by falsehoods.

Most of what is purported as evidence, when examined, cannot stand. But what can be expected from those hurling around charges of "murder", "conspiracy", "corruption" without the slightest evidence?

Where did the Schindlers get the money for this decades long distraction? Who was funding this?
