The superintendent of Devils Tower National Monument has dropped plans to change the monument's name to "Devils Tower National Monument at Bear Lodge National Historic Landmark." Small wonder as Wyoming's governor, the state's entire congressional delegation and almost everyone who lives near the awe-inspiring, 1,267-foot monolith in northeast Wyoming were opposed to the idea

But of course Native Americans may protest calling it Bear Lodge after the folk lore, just as they now want The Maid in the Mist's name changed because the White Devil uses it for tourism.

Back in the summer of '95, I stayed overnight near Devils Tower.

I wish I had time to go to the park and hike through it.

But I drove close enough to see quite a bit of it.

Stunning.
