Sharpshooters may take on Camp David deer

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - Too many deer roam the woods surrounding the presidential retreat at Camp David, and the government is considering sharpshooters as one way to manage the outsize herd, an official said Thursday.

A workshop will be held April 20 to gather public comment on four alternatives derived from more than 20 years of study at the 9.1-square-mile Catoctin Mountain Park.

The alternatives include using National Park Service sharpshooters to kill approximately 900 white-tailed deer; using fencing, repellents and contraceptives; using a combination of lethal and nonlethal controls; or doing nothing.

The government will choose a strategy in 12 to 18 months, said Scott Bell, the park's environmental protection specialist.

typical gubmint action: 20 year study and still can't figure it out. we can rest assured they'll pick the most expensive method rather than just have a 2 day hunt open to fee paying shotgunners.

at least they didn't call them 'snipers' .

Why don't they just import some predators? I bet a couple cougars could take care of that herd, no problem.

Um, why does the NPS need sharpshooters?

Okay, that's a good point. :-)

I was once with a group walking through the canyon on an evening "owl outing" when we happened upon a cougar. She didn't attack, but she was stalking us as we walked down the trail. We decided to backtrack and leave her to her territory, since we had kids with us.

Agree, a 20 year study seems a little too much!
If there are too many deer the answer is simple, bring in the deer hunters.
Also bring a few inner city kids and teach them both how to hunt and how to dress out deer.
Then send the carcasses to soup kitchens, poor folk etc. (Might send one here)
Everyone wins..........

I say hoist a cut-out cardboard picture of Ted Kennedy shirtless. That'll scare the deer away.

Hadidian said the society hopes to avoid the experience at Gettysburg National Military Park, where sharpshooters have killed more than 1,800 deer since 1995, donating the meat to food banks.

Yep, just like the gubmint. Wish taxpayers could get some free venison out of the deal.

Hell, let the fat murdering bas* roam naked on a tether. The walk would do him good and who know might just sober him up.

LOL! It takes a "sharpshooter" to put up a fence, apparently.

20 stupid years to decide what to do with fornicating deer? Kill the bastards and grind them up into venison jerkys and brats already. Fricking gov't bureaucrats.

The sharpshooters usually get $500 a deer too.

By opening it up to bowhunting, they receive money instead. Dumbasses.

Why the cut-out picture?
Just send in the real Ted Kennedy and you could have a feral hog season too.
