Devils Tower name proposal dropped
HULETT, Wyo. (AP) - Devils Tower National Monument will remain exactly that, with no additional moniker to recognize American Indians' long association with the monolith.
Superintendent Lisa Eckert said she dropped the idea of changing the name to "Devils Tower National Monument at Bear Lodge Historic Landmark" after Wyoming's congressional delegation said they opposed the idea. It was only an idea, Eckert said at a meeting Saturday, and the National Park Service won't seek the

Famous last words you one gets smacked down for a stupid idea.
Maybe the superintendent chould raise some real cash for the government by renaming it "ChevronTexaco Tower at Devils Tower National Monument." ;)
wow, and I'm not even drinking.
Steven Spielberg is relieved, he probably would have had to pay the Indians for using Devil's Tower in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
They were going to rename it the Bill Clinton Phallic Symbol National Monument...but decided not to make a mountain out of a molehill. ;-)
How about...Halliburton Hump ;)
They could have kept the English name, but then just added "Mako-wigiwam" (or whatever the local Shinab equivalent is).
Obviously the Indians didn't call it it "Bear Lodge", but something else. If it were in Michigan, that "something else" would have been something like "Mako-wigiwam". So put up a sign, calling it that, and a little plaque that commemorates what the Anishinaabe were up to there for a thousand years or so.
This settles the issue better and adds the sort of "color" that tourists like. (Remember, the point of a national monument is to draw tourists. And the point of anything out West is to draw tourists to cowboys-and-Indians country. So play along and add a little bit of Indian lingo. Makes the tourists happy, makes the Shinab happy two ways: (1) a little recognition and respect goes a long way, and (2) tourists buy things, and tourist money goes an even longer way, niijig. (Sorry, "kemo-sabe" or whatever the hell the "Hollywood Tribe" speaks.))
Whatever it takes.

Somewhere along the line, the city caved to three or more activists, and the thousands of illegals who were beginning to move into the area, and changed the name of that street.
I no longer live in San Francisco, but when I visit that neighborhood, I refer to the street as "Army Street" and and everybody knows what I'm talking about.
Thank you for those cool images!
Disney's Devils Tower National Monument at Bear Lodge Historic Landmark brought to you by Verizon.
Does it make me insenstive that I want to learn to rock climb so that I can climb Devil's Tower in June? Honestly, someone explain to me how people climbing a rock is distracting to their religious ceremonies? Are you telling me that Native Americans never climbed to the top of the Tower to get a better view? Most of these ceremonies have only been made up in the past twenty years anyway.
What would suck about climbing restrictions is that anything that stops tourists/climbers from going into the area will only hurt the local economy even more then it already is.
What great shots! Mr. RK and I went to Devils Tower about 3 years ago. It is such a cool place. There were some rock climbers scaling the Tower at the same time and there is a prairie dog town on the way out of the park. I know prairie dogs are a pain for ranchers, but they are a hoot for us tourists! :-)
Good pictures.
Funny looking tail on that bear though......
Megwetch,
Leave it to the National Park Circus to be so UTTERLY MORONIC!
