AARP urged to debate private accounts
Washington Times ^ | 4/11/05 | ceoinva

The chairman of a conservative group supporting private retirement accounts within Social Security has challenged the AARP to a debate on the issue, but the Goliath AARP won't bite at the jabs put out by the political David of USA Next. Charlie Jarvis, chairman of USA Next -- which styles itself as a conservative alternative to the 35-million-member AARP -- has called out the powerful lobbying group to hold a public debate on Social Security, preferably on a college campus. "Our two organizations have been at the forefront of a number of key issues that are critical to our members, their children and grandchildren, and we owe it to them to discuss and debate these issues out in the open," Mr. Jarvis wrote in an open letter to AARP CEO William Novelli. AARP spokeswoman Lisa Davis said her group, which has engaged in a public disagreement with USA Next's aggressive promotion tactics, has declined.

Quite telling, is it not? The AARP blatantly aligns itself with the "SS taxation-lust" of the left, then runs and hides from the realities of their position.

A socialist organization like the AARP will not hold an intelligent discussion with anyone because it is impossible.

AARP should have lost it's nonprofit status years ago.

Plus, it age descriminates against younger people (if you wwant to play a tune out of the liberal handbook).

How do USA Next benefits compare to AARP?

I just became a paying member of this USA Next ten minutes ago. I also upp'ed my membership fee with a donation to round it up to $100.

I read yesterday in an AARP hit piece that one of the founders of USA Next has been involved with Focus on the Family. AARP thinks this info will hurt USA Next...quite the opposite. That's enough for me to see that USA Next is the Christian alternative to AARP.

Got another AARP invitation for hubby in the mail yesterday, he turned 50 this January. As usual, I ripped it up and threw it in the trash, right where it belongs.

These people (AARP) are so full of crap. I canceled my membership and told them why - they responded in ways that proved they do not read their emails or any comments that do not support their agenda.

They should no longer be a non-profit, if in fact they are. They are a lobbying force for the liberal agenda and they articles they print are pathetic.

Think I need to go commune with my cat and calm down.

Yes, good therapy. I did the same - bailed on the AARP when the wolf came out of the sheep's costume. Sad -- many of us had great hopes for such an organization that would truly represent the needs and interests of the older folks. But power and money corrupted them, and you now see the result. I wonder if George Soros is a "contributing" member (along with the DNC, of course)...

I joined AARP because of promised travel discounts -- which I later found were mostly available to me even without the AARP membership. My membership is almost over, and I'm not going to renew. Seems the organization is hell bent on opposing any meaningful attempts at reforming Social Security, not just the private accounts suggestion.

every time i turn on my car radio i'm hit with an aarp ad against president bush's ss ideas.

until the republicans hit the media with counter ads, don't expect the president's ideas to advance.

I really bristle at the notion perpetuated by radical liberals and organizations like AARP that most of us are too dumb to plan our own retirement. I only had a high school education but I've been self-directing my retirement accounts for a lot of years now. Granted...I've had some help (a really good financial advisor), but the ultimate investment decisions have rested with me, and for the most part, I've made good ones. This goes along with the mindset that the goverment has to take care of us in all things (the socialist "cradle to grave" theory). Sorry...I don't want the goverment taking care of me. I can take care of me all by myself.

See what factcheck.org, a bi-partisan site, has to say about Aarp.

AARP is a propaganda organization. Their positions do not represent their customers (whom they call "members"), but just a clique which runs the scam.

I quit when they supported the Clinton socialized medicine plan, and have never rejoined. I don't care what great "services" they offer. I won't sell out, and neither should you-all.

I didn't. I cancelled my membership as soon as got my first nose-full of their leftist agenda. They are history.
