India and China agree to form partnership

NEW DELHI - India and China, the world's two most populous countries, agreed on Monday to create a "strategic partnership" in an effort to end their longstanding border dispute and boost trade and economic cooperation.

The agreement signaled a significant shift in relations between the two Asian giants after decades of mutual distrust and suspicion.

"India and China can together reshape the world order," Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said after a welcome ceremony for his Chinese counterpart, Premier Wen Jiabao, at India's presidential palace.

Together the two nations account for one-third the world's population.

The statement announcing the partnership was signed by both premiers and said the agreement would promote diplomatic relations, economic ties and contribute to the two nations "jointly addressing global challenges and threats."

India-China relations have "acquired a global and strategic character," it said.

"The leaders of the two countries have therefore agreed to establish an India-China strategic and cooperative partnership for peace and prosperity," the statement said.

I await March 15 and 16, 2006, with trepidation. (No, I haven't read that far ahead, but I sneak-peeked at enough Dragon's Fury passages to know that's your -- our? -- D-day.)

Then they already know they are going to lose badly in the end. I pray we don't have to go through anything like it...that's why I wanted to write them, to help in some small way to avoid it.

But hitting that date square on...that's freaky.

He scared me with this stuff a long time ago. You really ought to put together a blog of your own geopolitical prognostications, Jeff.

That date is not a D-Day...it's more like a terribly magnified Pearl Harbor Day. D-Day type things don't occur in the books for years afterward...maybe 2010 or 2011.

Very strange coincidence. This thread is about the announcement of the new China and India economic pact today, April 11, 2005.

Tolerance Sucks Rocks pointed out to me in post 79 that the month and year were the same as in the Dragon's Fury Series.

I checked. See post 80. The announcement in the Dragon's Fury Series, Book One, Breath of Fire, of the economic alliance between China and India, occurred on April 11, 2005...written in the fall of 2001.

Very wierd.

Both their cultures have been described as being better at replicating than creating.

Perhaps they are just following your script.

China is CAREFULLY lining up its ducks in a row... I think they are trying to get everything locked down in preparation for some Big Moves.

India; Russia; North Korea (given); South Korea? All the smaller players can be bullied, and China's got some nerve telling Japan to basically take a hike on the Senkakus.

To boot, it takes nerve for China to have their subs in places where they don't belong.

...and Poland, let's say around, I dunno, September 1, 1939 ?

Sample link provided, thousands more abound.

http://www.kasprzyk.demon.co.uk/www/WW2.html

Invasion:
On September 1st., 1939, 1.8 million German troops invaded Poland on three fronts; East Prussia in the north, Germany in the west and Slovakia in the south. They had 2600 tanks against the Polish 180, and over 2000 aircraft against the Polish 420. Their "Blitzkrieg" tactics, coupled with their bombing of defenceless towns and refugees, had never been seen before and, at first, caught the Poles off-guard. By September 14th. Warsaw was surrounded. At this stage the poles reacted, holding off the Germans at Kutno and regrouping behind the Wisla (Vistula) and Bzura rivers. Although Britain and France declared war on September 3rd. the Poles received no help - yet it had been agreed that the Poles should fight a defensive campaign for only 2 weeks during which time the Allies could get their forces together and attack from the west.

Have a safe trip.

Check this out, bet you've seen this, a ChiCom knock off of a Humvee.

http://www.sinodefence.com/army/transport/hmmwv.asp

This part kills me:

"During the 1988 Beijing Defence Exhibition, AM General demonstrated an example of its M998 4x4 high-mobility multirole wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) to the PLA. The vehicle was reportedly left in China after the exhibition closed for further test and evaluation. Since the early 1990s the Chinese petroleum industry and police departments have purchased a small number of civilian HMMWVs through commercial sources. Some of these vehicles are believed to have been used for reverse engineering purpose"

(for reverse engineering purposE!)

This is just a small example. I wonder if Russia would have done so well in WW-II w/o all the jeeps, trucks, etc. we sent 'em

You are wrong. The Indian National Army led by Subhas Bose had a lot of soldiers that were Indian prisoners of the Japanese. Bose made them into a fighting unit against the British.

One must remember then that a majority of Indians were against the British than the Japanese. They didnt care about the Japanese but I am sure they hated the British as an occupying power.

Having said that I am against the "india baiting". This China - India deal wouldnt have come about if those morons in the State Dept led by Condi stepped out of their cold war Silos and saw India for what it is - an emerging democracy.

I'm not so sure. Maybe India should get much more serious about democracy, freedom, and allignment with the west.

India is not going to form a military alliance with China. At least not at this stage. There is a lot of distrust toward the communist Chinese in India, built up over many years, that a couple of days of nice smiles, handshakes and promises are not going to wipe away.

That being said, India is not going to pass on this opportunity to settle the border issue with China. The Chinese, for their part, are trying to neutralize a direct threat on their southern border, when the time comes for action on Taiwan. They will be satisfied if there is no direct military involvement of India in the upcoming conflict.

India has proved that when the rubber meets the road, the U.S. always takes care of its own interests, and India will be left to fend for itself. Pakistan is probably the worst nuclear proliferator. Additionally, however much they claim innocence, the taliban and its sister organization al qaida, were under pakistan's patronage. Yet the U.S. continues to prop up and support this rogue country. It should be part of the axis of evil.

IMHO, this is just India taking care of India.
