RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - A Cary woman who attended Meredith College is charged with impersonating a military officer, fraud and other crimes.
Investigators say Lisa Jane Phillips began attending the school in January 2002, wearing the uniform of an Air Force captain. She left a short time later, saying she had been deployed as a pilot to Afghanistan.
Phillips returned to the college couple of months later with medals on the uniform she wore to class and stories of missions to Iraq and elsewhere.
School officials waived her tuition of more than 42-thousand dollars because of her military service.
But the Vietnam veteran in charge of the campus police became suspicious of her claims and contacted federal investigators. Phillips was arrested yesterday on a dozen federal charges.

Remind you of anyone?
She was probably sporting something like an Air Force Cross or the Medal of Honor. What a kook.
I just love stories that have a happy ending. :=)
***Remind you of anyone?***
Just a totally wild, wild guess, Jonny, but would the initials be J F'n K?
WOW! I've never won anything before. I would like to thank my mother, my teacher, the good people who voted for me, and YOU, Uncle Jonny, for making this opportunity possible.
What pond scum.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Thursday - April 7, 2005
RALEIGH - Acting United States Attorney George E. B. Holding announced that LISA JANE PHILLIPS was indicted by a federal grand jury in Raleigh, N. C., on Thursday, April 7, 2005, for false impersonation of an officer of the United States and related violations.
PHILLIPS, 34, of 5004 Buckingham Way, Apex, N. C., was named in a 12-count indictment. The charges included falsely impersonating an officer of the United States; falsely impersonating an officer of the United States in order to obtain a thing of value; making a false statement in a matter within the jurisdiction of the U. S. Department of Defense; six counts of wire fraud; possessing without authority insignia of the Department of Defense; wearing without authority the uniform of the armed forces of the United States; and wearing without authority decorations and medals authorized by Congress for the armed forces of the United States. (Penalty sheet attached.)
According to the indictment, since approximately March 2002, PHILLIPS had been wearing a United States Air Force uniform with captain insignia and representing herself to be a Captain in the United States Air Force. Based on her false impersonation, officials at Meredith College, an independent private women's college in Raleigh, N. C., waived tuition and expenses associated with PHILLIPS' education, which were valued at approximately $42,178.00.
The indictment alleges that the Air Force uniform that PHILLIPS wore was decorated with the following military medals and ribbons:
Bronze Star (medal and ribbon)
Purple Heart (medal and ribbon)
Air Force Commendation Medal
Air Force Good Conduct Medal
Joint Service Medal
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal
Kuwait Liberation Medal
Air Force Achievement Medal
Meritorious Service Medal
Aerial Achievement Medal
Investigation of the case was conducted jointly by the Defense Criminal Investigative Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U. S. Attorney Kelly M. Perry is prosecuting the case for the United States.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government's burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. A trial date has not been set.

Whoa, thanks for the info. Purple heart--I knew it!
It will be easy enough to prove whether she was ever in the military at all, and if so, her service record. If it doesn't match up, if she was never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, if she was not, in fact, a captain in the Air Force, and if she did, in fact, accept free tuition because of her 'service', she's guilty as sin.
"European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal"
Wasn't this a WWII award? Maybe she's older than she looks.

Yes, that's a WWII medal. That would stand out in any set of ribbons and is probably one of the reasons that guy contacted the Feds.
That's more medals than your average Italian Air Force General wears.
"WOW! I've never won anything before."
I won $3.00 on a scratch-off lotto ticket but even more important....I stayed in a Holiday Inn Express once.

Any picture of her?
I Googled but didn't get any results for her name.
I am sorry for Meredith College and their good name.
I'm surprised her college granted her a waiver on her testimony alone. My school goes right through the military to grant a waiver.
