A multidisciplinary association of scholars speaking out for human life
University Faculty for Life (UFL) is a group of faculty in various disciplines who respect the value of human life from its inception to natural death. Since its founding in 1989, UFL has promoted multi-disciplinary dialogue and collaboration among professors on abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. One of UFL's principal purposes is to educate the community about life issues and the reasons behind pro-life positions.
To further those educational objectives, UFL issues the following statement on the Terri Schiavo situation.
The Terri Schiavo case is complex, and the situation becomes more complex with every passing day. There is a risk, however, that the multiple court decisions and hearings and legislative efforts are obscuring a basic point. The real injustice of the court proceedings authorizing the withdrawal of her food and water is that they have failed to recognize the intrinsic dignity and value of her life. In fact, every human being, however seriously ill or disabled, has a dignity that must be honored by the state and by society. Terri Schiavo, just like the rest of us, ought to be entitled to the same protections that the rest of us enjoy. For Terri Schiavo, the provision of food and water is basic care that ought to be obligatory. The court opinions authorizing her starvation reject the sanctity of life ethic that has been an important foundation for the Western legal tradition. These opinions accept the logic that there are some lives that are not worth living.
This attack on the sanctity of life ought to be rejected. Accordingly, UFL deplores the decision to withdraw Terri Schiavo's food and water and supports efforts to protect her right to life and the inherent dignity of every human being.
