A friend of mine e-mailed me a link to this story and message string this morning, claiming to have a story about ACLU members that were smoking pot on the job, with photos and proof.
Instead I find an unsubstantiated and poorly written syopsis based entirely on the heresay of an anonymous Arkansas couple and some snapshots of a couple of anonymous college kids smoking in plain view.
It sounds to me like someone's been spending a little too much time with Dan Rather.
There are many reasons to doubt the validity of this claim. Were they huddled in a corner somewhere or in their cars, it might look suspicious instead, they're out in the open. Additionally, If you look at the pictures, there are multiple rolled cigarettes present. Marijuana smokers light one joint and pass it around, especially in public. While there is still a fraction of a chance that these kids are in fact nonchalantly smoking marijuana on the job, on the border, in broad daylight and in public view, any reasonable person can see that this is very unlikely. The stupid cocky college kid 'argument' really only goes so far. I can only assume that this conveniently anonymous Arkansas couple was either mistaken or deliberately lying to hurt the ACLU observers.
I come to forums such as this one to avoid sensationalist mainstream crap; otherwise I'd just watch FOX or CNN.
If an organizaton were to challenge my good intentions and my love of country, I'd be angry and on the defensive as well. I would think, however, that the "good guys," who I can only hope are sick and tired of the everyday corruption in our federal government and national media, would have some integrity and do some investigating before running wild with an unlikely story that furthers their cause.
Otherwise, they're no better than the knee-jerk reactionaries and sensationalists that they oppose.
