The Pittsburgh Tribune Review ^ | 04/07/05 | Dan Casciato

If it's spring in Mt. Lebanon, it must be time for the deer to devour Melissa Evans' tulips.

"I've never seen them in bloom because deer gobble them up before they are much more than a bud," said Evans, who woke up recently to find the posies at her Seminole Drive home munched to nothing for the third spring in a row.

I have no sympathy for deer as they ravaged my garden every year. It got so bad, I stopped buying flowers, what was the point. Some of them would clip off the bud and leave it at the base of the stem. Evil creatures.

Heaven forbid that we should kill deer and stop killing people.

Giant rats. I am NOT advocating this in any way, and disclaim any consequence of even bringing it up, but it is my understanding that leaving a pan of anti-freeze near the flowerbed will solve the problem. Does anyone else have any insight into this or other extermination techniques?

Big gun or big dog. Take your pick. Ever hear of the Scottich DEER Hound? One brace should be enough.

I adore Bambi Burger - and there will be a lot next winter if the danged things decimate my corn again the way they did last summer.

No offense to you and your flowers - I don't do flowers - between the deer and the rain I lost more than a third of an acre of veggies last year. We had corn from our garden exactly once last year.......we went out the next day to pick the rest and it was all gone. In the vicinty of 200 plants. I won't even get into what happened to my cantelope.

Sounds like wasteful vandalism to me.... Does no one in this area hunt?

that is not only illegal, it also poisons peoples pets and is a very cruel way a animal to die since it destroys the kidneys.

try buying cougar or coyote piss from a trapping supply company

I hit my first deer in March. Luckily, I was already slowing down for the sharp curve. $2000. There were four deer across both lanes of the road. They all stopped to watch me coming at them and I plowed into one of them. When we took the car to the dealer, there was an F-150 in the body shop that hit a deer and had three times the damage.

Human hair works well to, and also heard that mothballs work also.

I've heard that deer that have fed on hot peppers also make extremely tasty venison. Unfortunately I didn't get any of the ones that ate most of my hot pepper plants last year.
