Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer in the United States, with roughly four out of five people who have the disease dying within five years, Axelrod says. The five leading causes: "Smoking, smoking, smoking, smoking and smoking."
This cannot be stressed enough.

Especially starting at the age of 13 before the lungs are completely developed. The fact he started again after 9/11 probably didn't make a difference one way or the other, that ship sailed a long time ago.

In his last conversation with his brother, Johnny Carson kept saying, "Those damn cigarettes, those damn cigarettes."

My dad died as a result of complications from lung cancer. His cancer was not a type that is related to smoking, even though he was a smoked up until his mid-thirties. He died almost 12 months to the day from when he was diagnosed. It was inoperable, btw and had metastasized by the time it was caught.

My dad smoked over a pack a day from the time he was 15 until shortly before he died at age 75. 60 years.
However, he died of esophageal cancer, which has a 95% short-time mortality rate when diagnosed. He died six months after having his lower esophagus and part of his stomach removed.
The surgeon told us that the only people who contract esohageal cancer are smokers and heavy drinkers.
Anybody who smokes after all the stuff that's out there has a death watch.

My late Grandfather died of lung cancer back in 1967. He did not smoke, but worked with plastics which is what we think was the cause of his illness. He went from a very fit athletic man to a skeleton in less than 2 years. Very very sad.

One of the little cliques I have run into on FR is a group who tell each other that this is not true. They have various conspiracy theories to explain the bad news about smoking.

But, but there are Freepers who tell us this is just a myth.
Of course they are among the addicted but surely....
To: Hillary's Lovely Legs
Absolutely. Its relationship to heart disease and other cancers as well makes it a truly "nasty habit" as one of my aunts described it.
Itmust be an awful, awful addiction to not be able to stop in spite of all the knowledge of its dangers
