That is so flippin' easy for you to say. It scares me but it doesn't make me see how I can successfully quit at this time. I wish I were stable enough that I could. I hope I don't get a smokers disease because the i told you so's are likely to be worse than the disease itself.

Dying an early and painful death is a lot worse that 'I told you so'.

I quit using Zyban, 6 years and have 0 desire to smoke. It's not as bad as you think.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. I can't quit now either, but I've always smoked very low tar cigarettes, and I'm down to a pack a day now, very much hoping and planning to cut to half a pack when my youngest leaves for college. If I can do that, and stay at that level, I'm thinking that maybe I don't have to completely quit-- I hope so anyway. But quitting altogether is just too hard, and when I did (for over a year), I gained 30 pounds.

Anyway, hang in there, and best wishes to you!

Do whatever it takes. Seriously. You do NOT want to die this way. Two uncles died of lung cancer and my aunt said she had to give a friend his guns so that one of them wouldn't kill himself, he was in such pain.

Don't give up on yourself!

You CAN do this. It truly is a one day at a time thing. Sometimes it's a one minute at a time thing.

My father had a heart attack at age 60. He was in the cardiac care unit for 10 days. He quit smoking then. He smoked since he was a teen and was up to 3 packs a day. It's 14 years later, he is healthy and smoke free. Still craves them, but hasn't had one in all that time.

Don't give up! Get your doctor to help you if you need it and keep trying.

As an ex-smoker, I can truthfully say that the only method of quitting is to make up your mind to quit. To do so, you have to realize that smoking stupid. That you are stupid for smoking. etc!!!!!!

As I said, I am an ex-smoker. And, that is what I had to do to convince myself to stop so I could override the desire. Since I knew I wasn't stupid, I had part of the battle won.

Once I stopped, I had to fight the desire (habit) to light up; to reach into the shirt pocket, etc.

I also cut back on the food because once I stopped, I knew that the appetite would increase, in order to avoid gaining weight.

That's my story.

Dear johnb838,

"I hope I don't get a smokers disease because the i told you so's are likely to be worse than the disease itself."

My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in September, 2003. They told her maybe she had 3 - 6 months. She was one of the luckier ones.

She was dead 28 days later.

It wasn't a fun-filled four weeks.

The "I told you sos" aren't worse than the disease.

Hey, I quit in 1977 after smoking since I was in High School. It wasn`t easy-no-but I made up my mind that it had to be stopped. It is a matter of will power. Give it a try.

I'm with you brother! I just quit a month ago tomorrow. This was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It was/is like losing my best friend. I used an herbal concoction called "Smoke Away" and although it wasn't miraculous it sure did help with the cravings. I was a heavy duty, chain smoker, 2 to 2 1/2 packs a day. I am now SMOKE FREE! But still taking it day by day. Give it a try and good luck.
