On March 18th, a shocking crime took place in Berkeley, California, at a spot famous for sweeping Bay views, distinguished architecture, and the genteel atmosphere that wealthy progressives create for themselves. An elderly woman, walking home with her husband from an extension class at the University of California, was grabbed from behind by a young woman who had just walked past her on the sidewalk. In a flash, her throat was slit to the bone.
As she spurted blood, the suspect drove off with her companion, another young woman, in a light blue BMW M3 convertible, a car which carries a suggested retail price of 55 thousand dollars.
Astoundingly, the victim survived the attack, thanks to the many witnesses who called for police and medical assistance, and after six hours in surgery and an extended stay in intensive care, has been released from the hospital. The 75 year old also survived being struck by lightning in her youth.
From the beginning, police and prosecutors were very cagey in revealing information about the case. The victims name was not published in the press, for reasons of security. The evening of the crime, a suspect was apprehended, a sixteen year old juvenile, whose name was withheld, as is the usual case with juveniles. She was jailed and then ordered to undergo psychological examination. Subsequent press reports indicated that the suspect had a history of both mental illness and violent attacks. She had escaped from a care facility.
But the most curious aspect of the case is the identity, behavior, and subsequent official treatment of the companion. Eleven days after the incident, the press revealed that she was a county mental health worker assigned to Juvenile Hall.

Very scary stuff. Thanks for posting this one.
Wow. That Islam is one peaceful frickin' religion.
Whoa.
The Attack
The social workers apparent assistance in the getaway
The failure of the police to act on this
The tolerance of the people involved who are covering this up.
Berkeley in general is a real crime, or at least a crying shame.
The blame shouldn't be laid at Anne Rice's feet, but in the past 15 years or so, Vampirism has been on the rise as an "alternative lifestyle." These are not folks who simply wear black, and read gothic novels. They sport dental implants, come out only at night, and yes, drink their lovers' blood.
(If I learned anything at my years in NYU, it was that people in Greenwich Village are WEIRD.)
And recently a young boy in Texas was accused of belonging to a vampire cult:

The national media has not yet caught on to what is up in the Alameda County justice system.
Let's see what we can do about it.
Bump for the media people who lurk here.
SOP for the SF/Berzerkley area.
Wouldn't you know it, there had to be a UN connection.
Really wierd story ping, guys.
Really wierd story ping, guys.
Whoa! This reads like a bad novel.
Ummm, I'm no doctor or anything, but how exactly would one survive this?
"An Alameda County mental health counselor is being sought on a charge of being an accessory to attempted murder in the slashing of a 75-year- old woman near the Berkeley Rose Garden last month, authorities said Tuesday.
Hamaseh Kianfar, 30, of San Rafael, is on paid administrative leave from her part-time job at the guidance center at Juvenile Hall in San Leandro. She apparently did not call police to report the March 16 attack allegedly committed by a 16-year-old Oakland girl, authorities said.
The slashing victim and other witnesses told police that the attacker and a female companion had been walking on Euclid Avenue about 6:30 p.m. when the teenager grabbed the victim around the throat and, without saying a word, cut her neck to the bone with what looked like a kitchen knife.
Kianfar had initially told police she had witnessed the knife attack but later gave police a second statement revising that account, prosecutors said. Kianfar did not return a call for comment Tuesday.
The victim of the attack was walking north on Euclid Avenue with her husband, heading home from a film history class at UC Berkeley. She has asked that her name be withheld for her safety.
Her husband said Tuesday that he was gratified that Kianfar was facing a charge in connection with his wife's slashing.
"I have no reason to think that the police are doing anything that they shouldn't," he said. "This lady was there, and she failed to notify the police or control her ward or possible assailant. I assume that she is an accomplice."
The 16-year-old suspect is being held at Juvenile Hall on suspicion of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon..."

We still don't know the identity of the unfortunate elderly victim. That poor woman. Will the story become even more bizarre and twisted when that comes out?
It's a gorgeous setting, but one has to ask why sane people would choose to live in Northern California any more.
Wow... Schlockholm syndrome or something..
See #16...
