Hold the quiche: Manly men are back

By Amy Doolittle

Women want the "man" back in "manly," a Harris Interactive survey shows. The rough-and-ready attitude is in, women say, while the manicured "metrosexual" look is on the way out.

A full 61 percent of women surveyed said they would rather see a man's hands rough and working hard than well-manicured, a slap in the face to the extreme-makeover, suave-guy crowd.

Ninety-two percent of women said dependability is a desirable characteristic in an ideal mate. Only 16 percent chose "fashionable," and 62 percent chose "strong" as a desirable characteristic.

The Harris survey was commissioned by Dodge Trucks. The results, researchers say, are a testimony to the enduring power of sex roles on society.

"It just shows that there are some things that you can't change and that, while feminism for a long time has been pushing us towards androgyny with little girls with trucks and guys with dolls, women tend to have feministic traits and guys the opposite," says Carrie Lukas, director of policy with the Independent Women's Forum. "If anything, it shows what feminism hasn't been able to accomplish."

The Harris survey was conducted among 1,003 men and 1,128 women 18 or older from across the United States. Among the findings:

•75 percent of women said their ideal man buys his grooming products at a grocery store or drugstore, not a salon.

•72 percent of women said their ideal man spends his free time doing home-improvement projects.

Real men don't use "grooming products." We use soap, shaving cream, antiperspirant, toothpaste...

Just try disputing the use of pink or some other effeminate trapping on the basis that it isn't masculine enough in today's workplace.

A truly masculine man can carry off pink and not have it look effeminate.

Except for the fact that this manly-man likes his quiche.

Just call it "pie" and no one will know the difference. :)

Hubby got his hair cut, standard mans cut at our local barber shop which caters to the military and mainly farmers in our area. The man who owns it is an avid hunter and his magizines are hunting, golf, and various sports related ones. The photos on his wall are military related or of his trophy deers..hmm there are a few of the stuff heads of them too. No girly men are to be seen.

I could never comphrend what women see in a girly man.

"Real Men Don't Eat Quiche"

I keep telling my husband that. He insists otherwise. He cooks quiche, and we'd have it for dinner once a week if he had his way.

Which is why real men DON'T eat quiche... We can't even spell quiche (that's the spell checker there...)

We eat "egg, cheese, and bacon (or ham) custard pies!"

I have been called hick, redneck, barbarian, and savage.

I cook what I kill, and enjoy both the killing and the eating. Clothes are functional, and I haven't been in style since the grunge era, when I could wear my work shirts to the bar.

I don't understand pink as a mans color, but can clean a 1911 blindfolded. Guess that makes me odd.

Hold the quiche:

I cannot stand the word quiche which sounds like it's part of a foreign language.

I have a question. Why would anyone take this perfectly good food,

tear it to pieces, mix it with milk, pour it into a pie plate and bake it to eat???

You have to be one sick puppy to eat that garbage.

"What this finding should do is free young, marriage-minded men to think like men, act like men, and treat women like ladies..."

Sure, right after women stop treating men like a wallet with an appendage.

Nice hair!

Whenever anyone gives me grief for my "tail" (usually some conservative that thinks tails are only for libs), I show em the head of a quarter and point out that the commanding general of the Continental Army, and later 1st Prez of the US of A, sported one as well.

And then there was T. Jefferson, and Ben Franklin who were known to sport tails. They usually get the point.

"Ten bucks says this trollop had coat hanger scars on her forehead at birth."

Huh? Trollop? Go look at Independent Women's Forum -- they're the good guys! It's a conservative (sort of) women's site. Read what she's saying: feminism _can't_ make people androgynous despite years of trying. She's gloating, not complaining!
