FreeRepublic Pledges (Vanity)
TheHound

Posted on 04/06/2005 6:50:29 PM PDT by TheHound

Why do these pledge periods have to take so long? For a measly $66,000, I would think the pledge period would only last about a week. If everyone who used this cite for longer, in a year, than they do reading a magazine subsciption, pledged the price of a magazine subscription, I believe the pledge amount would be met in about two days. I certainly hope the day never comes when I have to see "Cialis" ads blinking on the right side of the FR page so they can pay for bandwidth!

Actually, I think that donors' monies are entirely the donors own business. If a FReeper or lurker so chooses to donate, their reasons/particulars are theirs, and solely theirs. Donors, as adults, are self-encumbered with as much or as little knowledge and/or conviction to spend their own monies...on anything.

And a dollar a day (or less,) for many but certainly not all, will probably not break their self-managed bank. The sky is not falling in FReepathon Land, as is made out to be the case by some who have NO intention of participating in the fundraiser irregardless.

I personally choose to participate. End of story for me. Done. Others don't. End of story for them. Done.

Dunno about that. Like I said, I noticed that myself as I was trying to figure out if the fundraiser was being affected this time around. I'm sure there's an answer for it somewhere. I just don't happen to know what the answer is, and it doesn't seem unreasonable for donors to know what their money is being used for. If JR's already explained it somewhere, you can just point it out and that'll be that.

Okay. I just figured that people might like to know. I'd like to know - helps me decide if a donation is a good idea or not.

However, I can't help but noticing the animosity arising whenever anyone asks for details about finances.

Well, I'm not even really asking for details - I'm not expecting credit-card receipts and such to be posted. But that seems like an awful lot of money, and it'd be nice to know at least generally what it was intended for.

they still harp about it

We get this bs every quarter and every quarter it is answered. If this guy has been her for four years, then he knows the answer. He's only stirring it up.

Give it a rest - I already said that there's probably an answer, I just don't know what it is. If it's handy, post it, and that'll be the end of it.

While I hope I have never insulted you, I just wanted to say I have always enjoyed your comments. They are thought out and honest. In the end, even if you disagreed it was still done with mutual respect.

Again thank you for enhancing the FR experience.

Good recap of the whole issue. Thank you.

I just don't go for the notion of people looking for an indignance on which to hang their hat, or those who continuously move the ball, rather than state their true purpose up front/center.

There will always be something that someone is not happy about.

This is a political board .. it goes with the territory

I've been here several years now and I've seen disagreements come and go .. some worse then others

And I've seen some, who's sole purpose is to do nothing but stir up trouble and pit freeper against freeper

Should some choose not to donate and that is their business

Just like if some chooses to help in keeping FR up and running is their business

Donations here are voluntary

I can't help but noticing the animosity arising whenever anyone asks for details about finances.

The reason for biting responses is that Jim Robinson has to answer this question EVERY QUARTER. It's almost always a malcontent that brings up the question of where the money goes so it does "trip a few triggers". I can understand a newer FReeper wanting to know but look at sign on dates and you will see the malcontents usually have been here for 3 or 4 years and have seen the answer 4 times a year. They're just stirring it up.

I agree with everything you've said. I also think that folks should be able to get simple questions answered, like what that money's for. Really now, I didn't think that anything I was asking was all that unusual of a request, but the way you guys are acting is enough to make anyone suspicious. What the heck is going on? If there's a simple answer, post it and let's move on. Jeez.

Really, now - it's not a complicated question. "We have some legal fees to cover" or "we're expecting some unusual expenses next quarter like x, y, and z" or "we put it in a rainy-day fund in case we need it for emergencies" would all be perfectly legitimate answers to a legitimate question. Rather than get all suspicious about something going on, I think I'm just going to assume that none of you really know, nor do any of you care enough to find out. Which is fine - that's your choice. I don't see why I shouldn't ask, though - I care, even if you don't.
