Bo Jackson Files Defamation Suit Over Steroid Story
CBS 2 Chicago ^ | April 8, 2005 | CBS 2 Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS 2) Former football and baseball star Bo Jackson lives quietly in the suburbs outside Chicago, but today he's making a lot of noise because of an article about him online.

Jackson says it sullies his good name. CBS 2's Jon Duncanson reports on the lawsuit Jackson filed Wednesday, charging defamation.

It was a dual career of the highest caliber that saw Bo Jackson slashing and swinging on two fields of play. Now he's slashing and swinging once again.

“Mr Jackson's reputation is not going to be destroyed by one irresponsible man with a laptop digging for a story,” Bo Jackson’s attorney, Daniel Biederman said.

A story from the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin Online Edition -- a southern California publication -- quoted a dietary expert at a public forum on steroid use as saying, "Bo Jackson lost his hip because of anabolic abuse."

At a news conference announcing a defamation suit against the reporter of the article and the paper, an angry and determined Jackson admitted one thing only: “If you can call southern cooking -- bread, collard greens, stools, ribs, fried chicken -- if you call that steroids, I'm guilty.”

Jackson says his career-ending hip injury had nothing to do with steroids because he's never had anything to do with steroids.

"I stand by everything I wrote in that article," Jim Mohr, the reporter of the article, told CBS 2, going on to say that the dietary expert brought up Jackson's name out of the blue.

But Jackson's attorneys say a tape of her presentation and a sworn affidavit both dispute that.

The former star says he's never met the dietician or the reporter, but whoever said it tarnished the reputation he's fought to build for his kids and for others.

“I aim to fight this and fight it vigorously," Jackson said. “I'm not the type of person that's going to lay down.”

Jackson says he's making his medical records public and very adamantly insists he's never touched anything closely associated with anabolic steroids or other performance enhancing substances.

Speaking by phone, the reporter of the article doesn't deny that. But he insisted his notes back up what the dietary expert said about Jackson. The publisher had no comment.

He was talking about this on WGN-TV during the White Sox/Indians game. He's pretty adamant about NOT taking steroids, and appears ready to back it up with facts.

"...back it up with facts..."

And how would he do that?

Bo doesn't know steroids.

Okay, so this allegation appeared in some little local rag that no one reads... but because of the lawsuit, just about everyone is now aware of the allegation. I don't get it.

By the way - he lost his hip from a hard tackle at Bengals vs Raiders playoff game... I know, because I was there.

Looks like he's doing everything possible to "open the books" on his hip and his recovery. Unlike McGwire, Sammy Sosa, etc.

You can't win a lawsuit for quoting a lie by someone else unless you definitely know it's a lie. And maybe not even then.

The real question is whether the dietician said it or not.

I'd be really surprised if Bo Jackson used steroids.

Deion Sanders, on the other hand...

Yep, but I also could've mentioned who won, but I won't. Bo of course, was briefly a member of the Chicago White Sox.

Good for Bo. He is a really good dad and a very good person. He and his wife really care about kids. I am glad he is going after this reporter.

Guess they think they have the proof.

Well, the "dietary expert" doesn't seem to have provided his name and Mr. Mohr might be up s*it creek.

A sworn affidavit doesn't mean a thing, because she has every incentive to lie to cover her butt, and an affidavit isn't subject to cross examination.

The tape is more interesting, because those can be verified and also checked to see if they were edited.

Looks to me like his aim is to very publicly put an end to any questions that his accomplishments are legit.

If only current players would do the same, I might care about baseball again.

He shouldn't have to. If someone has a credible allegation to make, let 'em bare the facts. Until then, Bo is the greatest athlete I've ever seen.

A public person, like Bo Jackson, will need to prove the reporter new the comment was a lie to show "malice" to win against the publication. If the publication can prove the dietician said it, it will probably win. If the dietician did not say it, the publication will be in a load of hurt.

Agreed, g. The accuser should lay-out the *facts*.

Bo is one of the greatest athletes i've ever seen. Top 5, anyway.
