House Republicans expressed strong support for Majority Leader Tom DeLay on Wednesday, dismissing persistent Democratic criticism of the Texan as evidence of partisan politics.
"I don't see any wavering of the support for the leader. I think a lot of members think he's taking arrows for all of us," said Rep. Roy Blunt, third-ranking among GOP leaders.
Blunt and others spoke out on DeLay's behalf as Democrats leveled a new charge - that the ethical controversy surrounding him was distracting from congressional efforts to tackle pressing problems.
"When politicians, the Republican majority, decides it is above the law, the American people are now seeing that they have a price to pay - at the pump, for their pharmaceuticals, and in the absence of initiatives that would help grow our economy, and to feed our children, provide for the health of our people, protect our environment, and, indeed, even provide for the common defense," said Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi of California.

Does Pelosi EVER shut up???
Pelosi must think she is totally bulletproofed by the leftist media. Even with that, her making this comment is surreal. I can't even imagine the level of hyprocrisy and sheer hubris that allows her to make her stinking little pile of dung accusation.
Excellent. Now back him on the Judges.
Mr. DeLay must rise above the criticsm and stay strong just as the President has done throughout his presidency. Now more than ever we need strong elected officials on the Republican side of the aisle to do what is right, no matter the fallout.
Amid Ethics Scandals
|
Are you saying that he didn't take influence-peddling trips to Britain and Russia paid for by lobbyists and foreign agents tied to Jack Abramoff? And that he didn't pay his wife and daughter more than half-a-million bucks out of his campaign coffers? It's all a lie?
It's all a non-story.
I know its out-of-fashion to give a flip about ethics, but I don't particularly care for politicians (democrat or republican) who sell their votes to lobbyists (or give every appearance of doing so).
How is it a scandal compared to Gore's, Clinton's & Pelosi's?
THERE ARE NO SCANDALS.
Even the articles say "ethical lapses" not "ethical violations".
Please take the time to read the stories about DeLay - deep down inside the stories - the authors ADMIT DELAY DIDN'T DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL. Rush disected this mess just this morning and pointed out the author's admission that what DeLay may have done was not an ethical violation.
This is nothing more than throwing mud at the wall to SEE IF IT WILL STICK - and remember .. these groups who are making the charges against DeLay are being funded by SOROS.
If anybody wants that information - I have it saved - it's an RNC Research document.
"Technically within the law" is universally decried as moral bankruptcy in the many Terri Schiavo threads. Why is it an excuse in Rep. Delay's case?
Besides, it sure looks like an ethical "violation" when a politician takes money from lobbyists and foreign agents for influence-peddling trips. It's generally viewed as "vote buying".
Yes. If you're not with Tom Delay you're against him.
Are you saying that he didn't take influence-peddling trips to Britain and Russia paid for by lobbyists and foreign agents tied to Jack Abramoff?
This chit goes on every day, in every line of business. Having people trying to schmooze you is part of the game if you have any influence over anything. Every one of these damned Congressmen goes on these trips, and we all know it. Do I believe it influences their votes? No, I don't. For every lobbyist who is for something, there's another one who's against it. They all want to take you out on their yacht, fly you to Moscow, or ply you with virgins. It comes with the territory. If this is a surprise to anybody, they need to open the door and enter the real world. |
I see this as a childish attempt to punish him over the Shiavo mess.
That's not likely to happen. The Senate is clearly against DeLay's efforts to browbeat individual judges, and most of his House cohorts oppose them too.
Corruption as usual, eh?
The fact is, lobbyists are useful. You will learn things you did not know about an issue by talking to them. If you listen to all the various ones on all the various sides of an issue, you will make a more informed decision when it comes time to vote. If you're so cheaply bought that you'd let an airline ticket sway your vote, you probably have no business in the Congress, or anywhere else for that matter. |
Too true. And very well said.
"vote buying"
What was DeLay being asked to buy ..??
There was a lot of stuff going in Russia at the time - they were wanting an increase in aid (which we were already supplying) .. surely the MAJORITY LEADER OF THE HOUSE WHO HAS SOME CONTROL OF THE PURSE STRINGS should be able to take a trip to Russia to see for himself ..??
But .. like I said .. you are just willing to believe the worst - and probably didn't read the rest of the article where the authors ADMIT Delay didn't do anything wrong .. HELLO!!!
"it sure looks like"
And .. that is exactly what the articles are designed to do - make you think IT LOOKS LIKE .. when in reality .. it isn't.
So .. you took the bait. Too bad.
