Six Iraqis Detained on Mexican Border

MONTERREY, Mexico – Four Iraqis were detained at an airport in the border city of Mexicali for allegedly carrying false passports, and two more were caught at a highway checkpoint, authorities said Tuesday.

The four Iraqis arrived Friday at the airport in Mexicali, across from Calexico, California, on a flight from Mexico City and were detained after immigration officials discovered the Dutch passports they were carrying were false, said Abraham Sarabia, an attorney general spokesman in Baja California state, where Mexicali is located.

Alya Kiryakous Dawood Sako, an American citizen and the sister of one of the Iraqis, was also detained and questioned. Dawood was released after immigration officials determined her passport was legitimate but she was turned to immigration officials and is awaiting deportation, Sarabia said. Sarabia said immigration officials noticed the men became nervous during routine questioning and once in custody of federal authorities they confessed their true identities.

The men were carrying Dutch passports under the names of Richard Richters, who Mexican officials say is Yacer Yoser Hana; Mikel Leewen, who turned out to be Basam Kiryakous; Jan Pieter Drijfhout, who is Basam Toma Jou and Robert Schurtman, whose real name is Sabham Kamel.

"Once in custody they told authorities they intended to sneak into the United States," Sarabia said. "They said they started their journey in Greece, traveled to Spain and then to Mexico City."

The men were being held at a prison in Mexicali pending charges for using false documents.

Also Tuesday, soldiers detained two Iraqi men traveling on Greek passports at a roadside checkpoint near Mexicali.

The two men were traveling aboard a bus bound for Mexicali. However, the photo on one of the men's passport's had been altered; he was also held pending charges, while the other man was held pending deportation.

Mauricio Juarez, a spokesman with the Migration Institute, said none of the men appear on terrorist watch lists.

It was not clear whether the Iraqis were linked to the Chaldean Christians, who have a sizable community in Southern California and frequently try to enter the United States through Mexico, claiming they face persecution in Iraq.

No red flags here. I'm sure they'll get a stern talking to and be released, before the ACLU comes to their rescue.

Does anything embarass/shame this Government?

The MSM and Lefties do their darndest - if it was the Bush doctrine to do what most Freepers want, then many would be crying about the inhumanity of it all and cases where potential terrorists were apprehended would never hit the news. Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.

"Damned if he does, damned if he doesn't."

He is required to uphold the constitution and thus protect our freedoms and sovereignty. If he is damned either way then he should do the Right thing and protect innocent Americans from terrorists, crime, stagnant wages, increased taxes, failing schools and healthcare all as a result in part to illegals destroying our country. I am glad Lincoln and Washington did the right thing and did not listen to the critics at that time. It may not be easy but history will always punish those who have shown to be weak in defending freedom and Americas sovereignty. GW will go down as one of the worst presidents of all time if he does nothing to fix the border problem and guest worker program doesnt count.

I guess I'm going to have to go with the "proof in the puddin'" instead of the "Chicken Little" mode - I won't go ballistic because something could happen (like all the Patriot Act foes who still can't come up with a single case of someone being wrongly hauled off by jackbooted cops) and see if perhaps there is more going on under the radar screen to try and manage things. It's a huge task to turn a round all the previous mistakes in border control and any idea the Prez has is promptly shot down; The Left says it's too much (unless they are running for higher office, in which case they will lie about their thoughts), and the Right says it isn't enough. Hence, no progress is made.

The sky is falling - regardless of terrorists crossing our borders the illegals are taxing the system beyond belief and our communities are suffering immeasurably by their negative impact. Bush has done nothing - his worker program is just another incentive to business to keep wages low further hurting working Americans by keeping our income stagnant.

Last post on the subject - Bush did not invent illegal immigration and most of us really do not have a firm grasp of the complexity and dynamics of a situation that has blossomed over decades. Who was it that mandated we supply watering stations for the illegals? I agree something needs to be done, but it will also take some common sense and patience unless you want to advocate just shooting them and bulldozing them into ditches. All these folks that claim to detest the Left-wing and prove it by doing their job for them by trashing Bush make my stomach turn - might as well put the gun in your mouth to keep from shooting yourself in the foot. Or, is blind, rabid concentration on one issue, to the detriment of all other issues the vogue thing for the right-wing today?

Anyway, some of you folks really chap my butt with the irrational way you will trash the Prez, even if it makes the lefiteis all that much more potent in their sick efforts to really take us into the slimy depths of socialistic amorality and fascism.

Don't bother. She's flat out of time.

I'd like to squash that rumor once and for all!

"They caught these, how many have slipped through undetected?"

These were caught by Mexican authorities. It isn't even their job to catch Muslim terrorists bound for the US.

"They're deporting an American citizen for trying to bring her brother into the country? Is this what they normally do to others, say originally from Mexico?"

They are deporting her to the US for attempting to smuggle her brother into Mexico. Why would someone originally from Mexico have to smuggle their relatives into Mexico? At any rate I doubt they would deport them since if they were originally from Mexico they would have duel citizenship. US and Mexican. They would go to jail instead.

I think I'm finally starting to understand this story....lol. She is an American citizen who was in Mexico trying to smuggle her brother into Mexico and ultimately into the U.S. The Mexican officials are deporting her to the U.S..

"Why would someone originally from Mexico have to smuggle their relatives into Mexico?"

Originally from Mexico? They're Iraqis.

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by this story.

sigh.. I know. You are the one who asked, "Is this what they normally do to others, say originally from Mexico?" I was wondering why you would ask such a question. I think you were the only one confused but I am happy you understand now.

Alright then my last post as well, there has been no mandate from any govt. local or federal to install watering stations - dont know where you got such an idea. If we dont speak out against these liberal elitist policies Bush and the RINOs are pushing on us or refuse to enforce the law as written, then we might as well call this a dictatorship. Bush and the GOP are wrong on this (and many other issues) and the natives are getting restless waiting for some real change.
