ROGERS, Ark. -- Wal-Mart is "good for America" and the barrage of criticism against the company is an effort to protect the status quo in retailing, President and CEO Lee Scott said Tuesday in a sharp attack on organized labor and retail rivals.
Addressing about 50 journalists gathered at the company's media conference -- it first ever media event Mr. Scott defended its wages and health care plans, criticized by labor groups as inadequate, and said that the company is able to save customers big money as it drives costs out of its system.
"Innovation and competition tends to change the status quo," said Mr. Scott, speaking at a hotel in Rogers, a few miles from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Bentonville headquarters.

So is China gonna bomb and try and destroy their best customer?
BTW, if they tried, there would be no more China as we know it today.
Quote: The idea that we can only buy products made in the USA, though noble, are delusional.
Please read my post. I have no problem about buying and helping out 3rd world countries. Just not the ones that have nukes pointed at us, force down our planes and hold the occupants hostage and plan their war games with a china vs US scanarios.
Just speaking for myself, if I'm in the market for a commodity-type item, I'm buying based on price. At this point, all types of items are falling into the commodity category, such as pocket calculators, dish washing liquid, fax machines and garbage cans.
If I want to buy, say, a $1,000 Herman Miller chair I'd go to the mom & pop store. But I don't buy many $1,000 chairs per year. All told I spend far more than $1,000 a year on commodity type items.
There won't be any place to shop around pretty soon. We will all be marching like soldjers to WM. Of course, it you rich, you won't have to.
Just spent $137 this afternoon at Wal-Mart on groceries. Cart was overflowing. Do it 2-3 times a month. Kroger and local Safeway subsidiary charge twice as much for the exact same meats and cheeses their deli dep't. Given their operating margin isn't better than Wal-Mart, it is subsidizing wasteful overhead such as union wages. I shop the other stores too but they rarely are competitive except for store specials that require discount cards.
Agreed. With freedom comes responsibility. Free trade with china is not fair trade. Aside from the moeral aspect, who can compete with slave labor? We are funding their war machine which one day we will have to confront. Was it Kruschev who said 'we will sell America the rope with which they will hang themselves"?
One of the primary causes of the spike in oil prices is china's demand to fuel their industries and military.
Rope very cheap at Wal-Mart. "China Price."
Was it Kruschev who said 'we will sell America the rope with which they will hang themselves"?

And where is the USSR today?
Walmart is good for America in the same way that illegal immigration, factories moving overseas and outsourcing are good for America.

John Chambers ceo of Cisco Systems " China will become the IT center of the world" Bush also approved the sale of IBM PC to china and china is the leader in computer manufacturing.
China also wants to become the worlds leader in manufacture of autos. GM just got a royal screwing by Shanghai Automotive BTW who stole all their ideas and are now making their own car that is an exact copy of the Chevrolet version. They plan on exporting 50K per year by 2007.
China has rest of the world to export to which includes billions of people. After our manufacturing base is destroyed they won't need our piddly 270 million people. BTW: China has more engineers than our entire population.
Yeah, we need to support Walmart. How else are the Chinese going to be able to afford buying T-Bills and finance our national debt. Did you know Walmart represents almost 3% of Communist China's economy? It's been worked out that if Walmart was a country it would be Red China's 8th largest trading partner. Remember when Walmart's slogan was 'made in the USA'? Then they changed it to 'bring it home to the USA.'
And where is the USSR today?
Trash bin of history.
Rubber Maid trash containers on sale at Wal-Mart.

WE DID NOT EXPORT MILLIONS OF AMERICAN JOBS, FACTURIES or HITECH PROPRIETARY KNOWLEDGE TO RUSSIA FROM '45 TO '89 EITHER.

Do you really believe this?
Where would you suggest the million AMERICANS who look to Wal-Mart to feed their families turn too?
Don't like Walmart? Go shop at Costco. Free of choice also means freedom to vote with your feet. Nobody is forcing you to shop at Walmart.
Personally, I'm very proud of Walmart, Microsoft, etc. They represent the best of breed of American capitalism. I'd like to see a Walmart on every street corner in India and China.

And Wal-Mart has done all of this, right?
A generation ago it was Japan selling cheap goods into our country, they also stepped up their navy, though not as much.
China is a large country and it will have a say in world affairs. However, they will soon get undercut by the Koreans and others, and let's not forget about India.
I share your feelings about China arming to the teeth. My only consolation is that much of the technology they are buying is probably obsolete against us. That and the fact that they are spending the money they are getting from us and therefore helping the world economy lift itself up.
