Wal-Mart Good for America

ROGERS, Ark. -- Wal-Mart is "good for America" and the barrage of criticism against the company is an effort to protect the status quo in retailing, President and CEO Lee Scott said Tuesday in a sharp attack on organized labor and retail rivals.

Addressing about 50 journalists gathered at the company's media conference -- it first ever media event – Mr. Scott defended its wages and health care plans, criticized by labor groups as inadequate, and said that the company is able to save customers big money as it drives costs out of its system.

"Innovation and competition tends to change the status quo," said Mr. Scott, speaking at a hotel in Rogers, a few miles from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Bentonville headquarters.

He's a bright boy, except for his mathematical shortcomings, he can figure it out.

I may have confused the 300,000 graduating per year with 300 million and with that I apologize.

You've gone from an error of a factor of 10 to a factor of 1000. Maybe you should slow down before posting numbers about China. Check your sources first. Accuracy is more important than speed.

Apology accepted. Just remember, I'll be here checking your math.......

One of you is saying that we need more engineers even as the value of engineers is plummeting because of "over production" of engineers by China.

One of you? Well, I guess that's a little better. If was me, Iconoclast, then let me correct myself.

At this point of our nation's retreat I feel we should start shutting down Engineering schools ... no need for them. They have become the 21st century equivalent of pre-WW II shipments of scrap iron to the Japanese.

From FR and a foreshadowing of thing to come in the US

India, China -- US and UK Universities experience Sharp fall in foreign students
India Daily ^ | Mar. 5, 2005

Things have changed. Students in Indian and Chinese Universities are far less enthusiastic in coming to UK and US for higher studies. Lack of job opportunities in US and UK, relatively better employment opportunities at home, higher cost of education and living expenses, extensive abuse and non-humanitarian conditions for alien students – all contribute to a shocking decline of Asian students in US and UK Universities.

"American companies do not care about degrees any more - they are shifting jobs to India and China in truck loads” says a student in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. “There is no need to go abroad, the heaven right now is sweet home”, says the student.

"You of all people as ex military should be against our funding of a brutal communist government."

I'm retired Army. I shop at Wal-Mart. The more we can open up free markets in and to communist countries, the sooner Communism will fall. May not happen with China in my lifetime, but it's a start.

We need Chicken Little-types in this world, too, I guess. I spent twenty years of my life defending your right to be one. Have a nice day. :)

Here's an interesting fact -- what is going up in "salary" are all the liberal arts jobs, at least for those who "make it." That is to say, a successful artist now earns more than ever.

You mean to say there are a lot of foreign students in US graduate classes? I'm shocked!! How would you like me to address that blindingly obvious observation?

Could there any phenomenon in our once proud nation that might upset you (other than possibly losing your access to slave made, cheap goods)?

I thought the way we defeated communism in Russia worked pretty good and we kept our jobs to boot. Apparently we are not shipping enough jobs to china because they shut down 44,000 "dissident" websites in their own country and have been executing more dissidents than ever. They also want to UN to control the internet and they are buying military hardware at a unbeleievable pace.

Also, if this "free trade" is supposed to be ending communism within china why is all their war games being designed against a confrontation with the US???

You are an example of George Carlins "Military Intelligence"
oxymoron.

I consider that a very positive development.

But, get back to me when it's time to start throwing pictures and sculpture at the advancing horde.

Interesting note about furniture manufacturing. If one goes to the industrial equipment sales/auctions they will see massive sales of equipment from companies going out of biz, or downsizing.
My concern is unemployed people vote Democrat.

This is still a proud nation. I'd be upset if a Chicken Little like you managed to start a trade war. Or if you managed to start a recession with your misguided economic theories.

Some people just don't care. As long as their whole job industry is not being shut down or outsourced who cares about their fellow citizen that are in that predicament.

Besides, don't ya know it's easy to lift yourself up after you've lost your job at age 49 and 3 kids in college. You can polish up on your job skills by putting yourself through a doctorate program with a degree in nanotechnologoy or biomolecular chemistry.

We live in very selfish times.

With full knowledge that many here think that's the worst possible fate, allow me to suggest they have been known to do a lot worse than that.

This has been entertaining but I've got yard work to do.
