Wal-Mart Good for America

ROGERS, Ark. -- Wal-Mart is "good for America" and the barrage of criticism against the company is an effort to protect the status quo in retailing, President and CEO Lee Scott said Tuesday in a sharp attack on organized labor and retail rivals.

Addressing about 50 journalists gathered at the company's media conference -- it first ever media event – Mr. Scott defended its wages and health care plans, criticized by labor groups as inadequate, and said that the company is able to save customers big money as it drives costs out of its system.

"Innovation and competition tends to change the status quo," said Mr. Scott, speaking at a hotel in Rogers, a few miles from Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Bentonville headquarters.

This thread should be saved in someone greatest hits collection. The ignorance is mind boggling. I am old enough to remember when buying usa was the norm, folks would not buy foreign if they had any kind of a choice. That was just not something you did, if you wanted to be accepted as a respected member of the community.

My how things have changed, and only us older folks get the connection that buying the products of nations that mean you harm only strengthen them and weakens you. This younger generation is going to have to relearn that lesson the hard way, since they will not listen to those that still remember it.

One of my greatest fears is that American foreign policy may be decided by millions of walmart shoppers rioting for cheap electronics.
Walter Williams was subbing for Rush one day and the conversation turned to this subject. A caller told Walter that a lot of stuff was only made in china, specifically, backpacks. Mr. Williams said that there were domestic producers. The caller said yes but they cost too much.
Mr. Williams said "So it's available, you just don't want to pay the price. You have no problem buying goods produced with slave labor".
Point goes to Mr. Williams.
So many dunderheads will only buy a latte from beans grown in the shade, only dolphin safe tuna, only diamonds not from a war zone.
They have no problem buying a cheap tv made by a 10 yr. old girl working 100 hours a week whose father was killed for being a Christian, his kidneys ripped from his body while his heart was still beating. Her mother forced to work with toxic chemicals with no protection, all of her siblings destroyed by forced abortion.
How much of this crap that so many must have did we do without when we were young? We just didn't know how deprived we were!

Nothing, you know nothing and you don't have the IQ points to figure anything out either. "Drives costs out of its system" means minium wages and minium benefits for all invovled. Here in thre USA that means a crappy job, in asia it means slave labor.

Well, if you're gonna start insults...

My IQ??

It's spelled minimum not "minium" (and ya did it TWICE)...

It's spelled involved not "invovled"...

Asia is capitalized.

School's out now for the day....

Agreed. After reading most of the comments on this thread I fear for this country. I really do. Most have no clue as to what is store for America with our One Way industry exporting, "let's share our wealth and technology with the rest of the world so we can have cheaper products today" trade deals. All very short-term thinking.

The government sanctioned arbitrage of labor AND (now) technology with future enemies will bite us in the you know what very soon. But hey, don't worry, just enjoy those everyday low prices at Wally Mart and live for today!

I assumed you accurately stated his position. If you accurately stated his position, Pope Leo XIII was wrong. If you misstated his position, that's your problem, not mine.

The text of encyclical is VERY short. It states the position clearly and condemns the socialism(communism)and liberalism (free market capitalism). Tell me if this XIXc encyclical is not conservative (this would be interesting to claim that XIXc popes were not conservative), or where does it err.

Do not chicken out, it will take you couple minutes to read, and answer please.

Those were the good days.. when 20% of the population lived in luxury on the inside of the system.. never challenged by uppity minorities, or any merit based competition for their jobs..

While the other 80% toiled day and night to scrape by.

Those were the good days.. when one paycheck took care of family needs nicely, queers were queer, bastards and divorce were rare, public schools educated, speech was free, music was music ....

Where did you learn your American history, PC gubmint schools? You sound like a red diaper baby.

You'd take away our freedom in order to punish China for its lack of freedom. That strikes me as absurdly weird.

So says the Chinese spies who illegally sold U.S. technology to China...so what does that make you, who echo their line?

Quote: It is those who would restrict Wal-Mart's rights to purchase goods on the most advantageous terms and those who would restrict Wal-Mart's customers' rights to purchase goods on the most advantageous terms who pose the threat to American freedom. Not me.

Yuo can also read yuor paragraph this way:

It is those who would restrict Iran's rights to purchase nuclear weapons on the most advantageous terms and those who would restrict Iran's terrorost rights to purchase WMD on the most advantageous terms who pose the threat to Iran's freedom. Not me

I have nothing against walmart, just that they buy the majority of their goods from china which propes up a communist regime.

Nice try. But TVs and DVDs are quite philosophically distinct from WMDs. If you don't understand the distinction, I can't help you.

Wal-Marts the real deal.

Wal-Mart's policy of collecting death benefits on their employees tells me all I need to know about this odious company.

I was tired last night when I read this and thought it was stupid. After reafding it again this morning I just came to the conclusion this is one of the most assinine comments I have ever read on this site.

Lech Walensva(sic) said that before the Pope visited Poland the solidarity movement was going nowhere and was ragtag and was actually folding. He said the Pope rallied the people and that is what got the solidarity movment going. He said without the Popes visit the crushing of the comunist would NOT have happened. It was the key factor.

Also I'm Catholic and I know what my local church does for the poor. Walmart could not hold a candle.

I have nothing for or against Wal-Mart, it's just a place to shop as far as I'm concerned but here in York, Pa. the grocery sections are just awful. The produce section smells like a garbage can and I saw a bird pooping on the potatos, no shit, it was flying around crapping everywhere. The fish and meat section smells just like the Inner Harbor did near the Proctor & Gamble plant not the spicy McCormick smell.

It's good enough for the peons.

We are well on our way to becoming a South American society ... ruling class, minimal middle class .... and the great unwashed.

Black laborers in New Bedford, Massachusetts -- who were not fully "free" in any sense of the word -- had a higher standard of living than most plantation owners in Maryland where he lived.

Wow. That's right up there with the Wal-Mart/Catholic church post for the most jaw-dropping of the thread.

I agree 100% I have been selling employee benefits for the last 25 years to both white and blue collar companies. I have never seen such a disparity among wages. The top eschelon(top 5-10% of the company) wages have syrocketed but everyone elses have been stagnet or have been going down. I recived a wage list of employees several weeks back from a company whose account I've had for 10 years. The wages are the same as 10 years ago. One day there will be a minimal middle class in this country.

USA Today last week showed the wages of the top ceo's. They went up on average 33% in one year while the workers at the same companies went up on average 2.5%

Nice try yourself. Can you prove that China is NOT heavily aided and abetted in their WMD proliferation practice by your actions, and WalMarts' in propping up their system? How much do you think their military is taking out of every U.S. dollar spent on their export surplus to the U.S.?

I advise you to read this Congressional testimony first before you answer.

Yeah out of 200 employees in each store, 25 are paid o.k.(managers etc), the rest are 25-30 hours per week at 6.00 per hour.

Huh, you missed the point. I said "afford" a high standard of living, not "paid" to a high standard of living.

Millions of poor people get more stuff for the little money they have by shopping at WalMart. In your world, you would make all the poor pay double, just so a few employees could make an extra buck an hour.

Corporate executive greed is a monumental scandal that is not just ignored, not just minimized, but enthusiastically cheered on by many on this forum.

For them Christ's admonition about the rich man and the eye of the needle has been replaced by "He who dies with the most toys, wins".

Irony of ironies, we single mindedly combated atheistic, materialistic communism for half a century only to replace that mission with an equally single minded determination to become the most materialistic nation the world has ever known.
