Name That Pope
2005-04-05 | Me

Posted on 04/05/2005 2:58:49 PM PDT by UnbelievingScumOnTheOtherSide

What papal name do you think the next pope will take?

As I search the list there have never been 3 popes taking the same name in a row. Bookies are giving 7-4 that the next pope will take John Paul III. There was never a double name before John Paul I. Not interested in this thread who will become Pope, just what name do you think he will take? Is there some Pope that the next Pope will want to pattern after besides John Paul II that any new Pope would see the Church in need of? If it were me I might take Urban, but somehow I don't think that that will be it.

That is correct. John Paul I was the first pope to chose a double name

What's the deal with taking on a new name as Pope, anyway? What would have been wrong with the last pope being Pope Karol or Pope Wojtyla?

When I got a new job, it didn't come with a name change. I would have chosen something flashier than my current one.

Since Sir Paul McCartney had the writing credits for some Beatle tunes changed to McCartney-Lennon, he wants the next Pope to be named Paul John.

Some very interesting thoughts here. Thanks for posting this.
I vote for Pius XIII as well.

The Malachy prophecies says this next one is "glory of the olive". It's been alternately interpreted to mean someone from the Olivian order, someone from Italy (presumably some part with a heavier emphasis than most on olives), someone who is olive-skinned, or Cardinal Martini.

Believe it or not I'm not kidding on that last one.

The Problem with Pope John Paul III is that it is actully honoring John Paul I...not John Paul the great...which is why i would go with Pope Karol or derivitive of that name

Oh, I know about Malachy, and I know how people can fit vague prophecies to fit events. I just found the phrasing of your statement funny, for some reason. Like maybe they should do background checks or ask the question in a job interview, "Do you, or have you ever had any connection to an olive?".

I will bet that every candidate has some connection to an olive and no matter who is chosen it will be taken as a sign confirming St. Malachy.

Pope Martini?

In keeping with the British Rock band theme, how about Pope Keith Mick?

If the Church wanted to raise funds, they could put the naming rights to the new pope on Ebay. Some lady did that recently and got her name changed to Golden Palace.com for $15,000. Imagine the advertising value of that! Over 1 billion people worldwide following the preachings of Pope Ditech.com.

I noticed there's never been a Pope Michael. That's a religious sounding name, and if I were Pope, that's the name I'd go with.
