U.S. Senate Republican leader Bill Frist said on Tuesday that courts had acted fairly in the Terri Schiavo "right-to-die" case, differing sharply from a vow of retribution by his House of Representatives counterpart, Tom DeLay.
"I believe we have a fair and independent judiciary today," said Frist, now trying to resolve a battle with Democrats over judicial nominations that threatens to tie his chamber into knots. "I respect that."
Frist and DeLay, as the Senate and House majority leaders, had led a charge for emergency legislation calling on the federal courts to review the Schiavo case. President Bush flew back from a Texas vacation to sign the bill into law. But federal courts refused to intervene and let stand a Florida state court order to remove a feeding tube from the brain-damaged woman. Schiavo's husband had said she would not have wanted to live in her condition, but her parents fought against the tube's removal. Schiavo died last week after spending 15 years in what courts had ruled was a persistent vegetative state.
DeLay, a Texas Republican, said afterward: "We will look at an arrogant, out-of-control, unaccountable judiciary that thumbed their nose at the Congress and president when given jurisdiction to hear this case anew."
In a written statement, DeLay said: "The time will come for the men responsible for this to answer for their behavior."
Frist, asked about the furor over the case, told reporters, "I will let members (of Congress) ... speak for themselves."
But the Tennessee Republican said he believed the courts "acted in a fair and independent way."
The Schiavo case was unique, Frist said. "Our bill said, 'let's let the courts take another look,"' he said.
Ah, excuse me, but can you - or anyone else, tell me why we still have an immigration problem - like, tell me what have the dems did in their years in power to fix it?
Go ahead, I'll wait.
On second thought, no I wont. It's already 1:30 - I want to get to sleep before the sun comes up.)
In the meantime, for those who cut and run the minute they get upset, don't let the door....
Who needs people who wont stand and fight, but leave the field to the enemy
Lott said something that was blown up into a faux pas - even by whitesheet bird, for G*ds sake. And we let them run him outta town with their slash and burn slander machine.
While Berger walks, Hillary doesn't even get one question about her finance chairman and the illegal funds, etc etc.
And now they're after DeLay on nothing. Are we going to just shrug and let them continue?
Nah, things are rough, jump ship
the problem is the ones that call them spineless and then say their taking their marbles and going home. ... a "spineless" thing to do!
AMEN and AMEN
Repost and Repost
this is the kind of action that gives the Dems the election - remember, Clinton won with only 43% of the vote - because of Perot (Who I still suspicion was a a shill for the dems)
"... a rush to jump ship."
That's right. It probably turns a lot of people off Free Republic. These people are either Democratic trolls, idiots, or cowards. In any case, they are not about saving this country. They are about their own twisted egos and paranoia. The fewer of them, the better. The fewer of them on FReep, the better. I always do my best to make them feel unwelcome.
A plan for stiffening GOP spines?
Show them how unacceptable the status quo is. How extreme the Democrats' positions are. How reasonable ours are. How we DO win elections with real GOP positions. And ask them how much their country means to them. It's one thing to demand that they take a certain position. While that's better than nothing, it doesn't persuade anyone. Conservatives need to work harder at persuasion with their representatives in Congress and elsewhere.
"how are they doing"?
That's not my point. I've already conceded that the GOP isn't doing well. My point is that the GOP, and only the GOP, is a large enough institution to potentially stand in the way of the Rats. Therefore, we cannot walk away from it.
It's also perfectly fair to ask: "How are YOU doing?"
Did Greer adequately explain his credibility rulings, in your opinion? I heard a former SCOTUS clerk say last week that he clearly did not....
I dislike the "country-club cowards" too. Indeed, that's an appropriate name for many of them, though I don't know enough about Kolbe to say whether he's in that category.
I think McCain is a fool more than a coward, but that's a quibble. He certainly votes like a country-clubber.
But here's the thing, Luke: Our guys aren't that great, but the Rats are much, much worse.
I hold our government in utter contempt. I could not force myself to go vote today. What difference does it make who is in office? They are either corrupt, inept, spineless or all three and for now, I am fed up with this process.
Our government made an a$$ out of the Terri Shiavo case and apparently are too arrogant or stupid to even realize it. I have every confidence they will do the same with the protection of our borders.
God Bless and watch over this once great nation.
This is very true. The Schindlers didn't have hundreds of thousands of dollars for lawyers like michael did (thanks to Terri's funds) - so, for years, they had to depend on a lawyer that took it pro bono - and he was incompetent to the max, leaving huge holes big enough for Felos and others to drive Mack trucks thru
but let's not put any blame there - it's all the Bush's fault because they did only what they could within our laws...they should have broken the law and gotten impeached (the dems were licking their lips in anticipation, they have thier impeach-ducks in a row) - and we'd be left with an administration brought to a standstill, all the gains of the last years down the drain, no more accomlished - and hillary for sure.yeah, that sounds like a winner
could be. Cheney was taken out of context - If we knee-jerk believe the media - how soon we forget - we play right into their hands
without a sliver of conscience or morals
snakes have testicles?
you can take that to the bank ;o(
our forefathers would have thrown these idiots to the dogs a long time ago.
I concur - and it's getting old real fast.
I suspicion the trolls have been lurking all during the last 2-3 weeks, looking for weak spots
I'm getting those vibes too - time to go. My grampa taught me not to bother getting into a p*ssing contest with a skunk :o)
please let us know what kind of goofy answer you get from sister frist's office. thanks
First appears to be living in the gray fog of nothing land. We have got to get these empty shirts out of there! Hey freepers lets run for political offices by the droves.
