Oh, I didn't even think of separating them--thank you--since they haven't bloomed, I guess it would be okay to do it now---

Maybe I'll go to a garden center and check for this area--
I grew up in Colorado and we had beautiful Iris and I don't remember my mom or dad doing anything to them--well except my dad sometime would accidently mow them down...!

Do NOT do it now...Think late July or Aug is the best time....You father was trimming back the iris....It's necessary for their roots to grow (Rhizomes) and for them to expand....The blooms form on the new growth.....A weed eater or hand trimmer does the same things.
