Colo. Cracks Down on Left-Lane Dawdling

Mon Apr 4, 9:15 AM ET AP

DENVER - Colorado is serious about its no-dawdling law in left lanes. Drivers who insist on staying in the passing lane are risking tickets as the State Patrol has begun enforcing a law requiring motorists to use the left lane for passing only.

Since the patrol started enforcing the "Left Lane Law" three months ago, troopers have written about 460 tickets or about an average of five a day to drivers who dawdle in the left lane.

The law applies in zones with speed limits of 65 mph or higher. It took effect July 1, but troopers gave drivers until January to get used to the new law; warnings were issued instead of tickets.

Master Trooper Ron Watkins said that since the ticketing campaign began three months ago about 90 percent of the drivers he has pulled over for dawdling or cruising in the left lane said they didn't know that it was illegal to do so.

Violators of the left lane rule may be fined up to $41 and have three points tacked onto their driver's licenses. The law is not enforced when the highway is too congested to allow drivers to pass.

I've never understood why so many people insist on this extremely annoying behavior. It's just weird.

More money for the cancer that is our government. And yet we wonder why it keeps growing.

I sincerely wish they would do that here in Ohio, where you get the people who camp in the left lane doing 65 at best. I don't know who are the worst offenders - those from Ohio, Michigan or Ontario - they are all equal opportunity rage inducers.

No kidding? 65% reduction? I sure wish they'd pass a law like this in Texas. I also wish the DPS would start a public service campaign (billboards, radio, tv) with tips on driving (starting with the 'left lane is for passing' rule would be fine with me).

It's a control thing. Left lane hogs want to force other people to do their bidding. I have a friend whose wife brags about doing that, driving the speed limit in the left lane then speeding up if someone tries to pass her on the right. She wants to control other people and keep them from driving too fast. You can guess which party she votes for.

The advise I always give my wife and my mother: "Stay Out of the Left Lane!"

If you can't run with the big dog SUVs, stay out of the left lane!

Not nearly as harsh as stringing 'em up!

Not in Atlanta. The roads are so congested, we need to use every lane we've got access to!

The one pisser about this law is that it only applies to roads where the speed limit is 65 or greater, and it doesn't apply during rush hour.

I drive I-25 everyday, and since its a construction zone, the law doesn't apply (unfortuately - you have no idea how many idiots sit in the left lane going 50).

Bad drivers like the left lane on the expressway because
there is less traffic there. They are just too dumb to
realize they are the reason there is no traffic ahead of them.

Actually Gallagher had the right idea. Get one of those pop guns that shoots out darts that have a flag on the end that says "Stupid!" If a cop sees enough "stupid" flags on somebodys car, they get a ticket for being an a-hole.

I'm a city prosecutor in one Texas municipality and a municipal court judge in another - sounds like a full employment act to me...

Finally, a traffic law that MAKES SENSE and addresses the real problem of PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE DRIVING.
