Pakistan to buy four warships from China

Islamabad: Pakistan is to buy four frigates for its navy from long-time ally China, the defence ministry said on Monday, ahead of a visit by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao.

"Pakistan and China have signed four contracts for the construction of four F-22P frigate ships for Pakistan Navy," a Pakistani defence ministry statement said.

The frigates will be equipped with anti-submarine helicopters, surface-to-surface and surface-to-air missiles and other defence systems, the statement added.

"These ships, after construction, will be inducted into Pakistan Navy which would not only enhance the operational capabilities of Pakistan Navy, but will also make impregnable the seaward defence of Pakistan," it said.

The statement did not say how much Pakistan would pay China or how long it would take to build the four warships.

The contracts were signed by Pakistan defence production secretary Ali Muhammad Jan Aurakzai and a senior Chinese official in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, the defence ministry statement said.

China is Pakistan's strongest ally and Islamabad relies heavily on Beijing for its defence needs.

Many Chinese companies operate in Pakistan and China is involved in the construction of a deep-sea port at Gwadar on the Arabian Sea.

China's Wen arrives in Pakistan on Tuesday for a three-day visit.

At this point of time,it does pay to remember that China operates around 2 warships which use the LM-2500 gas turbines,purchased in the 1980s & their main ASW torpedo is a variant of the baseline MK-46.They would possibly have got Phalanx systems if it weren't for Tianammen.Hence,putting all the blame on Clinton is akin to being blind to the whole issue.

Well clinton was one of the worst, but Carter, Nixon for handing their own things to China (Panama Canal) and GW the 1st for giving China "most favored status." We would not have the "one China" policy if not for the fact that the democratic party and even some republicans are fully subsidized by China.

I keep hearing this but it is in fact inaccurate. Can you point out how china owns the panama canal, controls it, etc.? Controlling balboa and cristobal ports in no way means china 'controls' the canal.

Need to double-check but I seem to have read somewhere that EVEN the Russians does NOT possess the "AEIGIS" system yet

If so, how do the RUssians give something to China that they don't have

I read the specs and it doesn't look very impressive. But I guess it's one step up for the Pakistani navy. $750 mil for 4 ships is pretty cheap too.
