Cheney Opposes Retribution Against Schiavo Judges
Washington Post ^ | April 4, 2005 | Mike Allen & Brian Faler

Posted on 04/04/2005 8:06:29 AM PDT by tessalu

Vice President Cheney says he opposes revenge against judges for their refusal to prolong the life of the late Terri Schiavo, although he did not criticize House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) for declaring that they will "answer for their behavior."

Cheney was asked about the issue on Friday by the editorial board of the New York Post. He said twice that he had not seen DeLay's remarks, but the vice president said he would "have problems" with the idea of retribution against the courts. "I don't think that's appropriate," he said. "I may disagree with decisions made by judges in any one particular case. But I don't think there would be much support for the proposition that because a judge hands down a decision we don't like, that somehow we ought to go out -- there's a reason why judges get lifetime appointments."

Do you take umbrage at all epithets or just those directed at you? For instance, when you characterize people as "religious extremists", should those folks take umbrage and ping Jim Robinson?

Just as "Lewinsky" became a verb -- as in, she gave him a full Lewinsky, "Schiavo" should now become a verb - - as in, it would serve that evil mob boss right if some other mob boss "Schiavo'd" him. Unfortunately, Terri Schiavo wasn't a crime boss, and didn't deserve to be off'd.

When it comes to murder, the opposite point of view should be booted off the board in the same way most DU posts are because they are so contrary to conservative values.

Strawman. Nobody was advocating murder on the TS threads.

She's not trying to have them kicked off of FR.

This stuff is getting out of hand, walsh. Labelling people on FR as "murderers" is absolutely above the pale, along with all the Nazi references.

And, it doesn't appear to be waning.

Another '04 sign-on!
I am all but convinced these people are from DU
with one purpose: to disrupt. Exactly as threatened
and promised last year in (gasp) '04.

Hmmmmm...pardon me but in your example Lewinsky is a noun, not a verb....

Senseless to try. It's Jims site, he makes the rules.

This stuff is getting out of hand, walsh. Labelling people on FR as "murderers" is absolutely above the pale, along with all the Nazi references.

Since I've been here I've been called all manner of names, epithets and people have even questioned my heritage. How many times were we called racist in the Trent Lott affair? Religious nut because we oppose abortion? Statist, leftist and communist in the Great Libertarian Wars or in the Terri Schiavo case because my understanding of the law and the Constitution is evidently different from others? It rolls off my back like water on a duck. I know what and who I am. Perhaps that is why I don't see it the same way as others do. It is after all, simply a board to post opinions. I don't think opinions equating what was done to Terri Schiavo as murder should be banned. I also don't think people who call me a racist, a religious extremist or an Irish pr5ck should be banned. But, hey, it's not my website.

And, it doesn't appear to be waning.

It's waning, believe me Sink, this too shall pass. The opused will return under new nome de guerres and all will be well with FR.

Of course, if everybody posted under their real name like I do, you would see a lot less theatrics, vitriol and internet heroes. But then again maybe not. :-}

People are free to do as they wish. You might try working back from #163 to get an accurate picture.

Freepertoo did not direct any epithets at me. Rather, he (or she) advocates closing down all voices which he perceives as not agreeing with his position on the Schiavo case. He doesn't even know what my position is on the Schiavo case. Like so very many people who've been posting about this case recently, he just leaps to the assumption that, because I don't toe the exact same line as most, I must therefore be "pro murder."

That is preposterous on its face. To defend such nonsense -- yes, such extremism -- does not speak well of you.

Cheney's no conservative.

He can be brainy, articulate, strategic. Fine. Wonderful. Just wonderful.

But at the end of the day, if he had no 'heart', it doesn't amount to a hill of beans, and as a public official accountable on moral issues and to God to Whom he swore an almighty oath, he'll have some explaining to do. Sad.

If that is your misconception, jwalsh07, then let me clarify. I don't want anyone kicked off. Free speech is too valuable. It was Freepertoo who said people who are "pro murder" should be kicked off.

As for my writing to Jim Robinson, it was for the exact purpose stated: To ask him if what Freepertoo suggested is what he wanted? To kick off anyone whose views on Schiavo do not toe the predominant line expressed here lately.

Now the Haters can attack Cheney. Let's see time to throw George, Jeb and Dick under the bus. Not fanatical enough.

presumably, my defending your right to use the phrase "religious extremist" also does not speak well of me.

Integrity is the virtue of remaining loyal to one's convictions and values. A man who is able to hold to a principled course of action, to pursue his values relentlessly, without compromise, and to do so under duress and the scorn of others, deserves our deepest respect.

Compromise in the defense of political expediency is no virtue; fanaticsm in the defense of moral integry is no vice.

Your very life, and mine, may some day depend on it. They took Terri first. There will be others. Mankind has already witnessed where evil proliferated, simply because too many 'moral men' refused to take a stand, to otherwise have looked injustice and intimidation square in the eyes, and to not have backed down.
