'A Christmas Story' fan buys house where film family lived

CLEVELAND - Brian Jones' purchase of a house in Cleveland has linked the California man's future to "A Christmas Story," the nostalgic holiday film he loves.

He wants to create a museum in the home where the film family lived and the main character, a boy named Ralphie, daydreamed of shooting bad guys with the BB gun he hoped his parents would buy him for Christmas.

"I'm getting overwhelmingly positive feedback," Jones, 29, of San Diego, said of owning the house. "People who are fans (of the film) think it's the greatest idea ever."

The former Navy man with a degree in aerospace engineering could not resist when his wife, who is serving on a Navy ship, informed him by e-mail that the house used in "A Christmas Story" was for sale on eBay. The starting bid for the four-bedroom house was $99,999.

... only I didn't say "fudge" ...

I said THE word, the big one, the queen-mother of dirty words, the "F-dash-dash-dash" word!

The amazing thing about that movie was how accurately it depicted the NE Ohio culture, even though it was supposed to be set in Gary, Ind.

My wife's hometown near Cleveland has a Bumpass pharmacy.

I lived near the Farkus family in my town nearby.

West Virginian immigrants to the Akron-Cleveland are are the object of many hick jokes.

The neighborhood was typical.

My parents used to take me downtown to see Higbees and window gaze at all the mechanical displays.

That movie brings back a lot of warm memories. It was very much like my NE Ohio childhood. (But I didn't get the BB gun till I was 13!).

My wife gave me one of the leg lamps for Christmas this year. It's sitting right in the front window of the house. Very nice. A major award!

My guess would be that people in places like Toledo, Ohio, South Bend, Indiana, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Buffalo, New York, Wheeling, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Detroit, Michigan would relate to "A Christmas Story" if they grew up in the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

This is why FR makes it difficult to write opinion pieces. What I think is an original idea lasts about 14 posts.
