DOES SCHIAVO CASE SIGNAL 'CULTURE OF DEATH'?
By: John W. Kennedy
AG News - Conservative groups believe Terri Schiavo's March 31 court-imposed death by starvation signals a clear society shift in devaluing life.
"We are quickly slipping into a culture of death," said Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council.
Focus on the Family founder James Dobson criticized judges who failed to act to save Schiavo's life as "guilty not only of judicial malfeasance, but of the cold-blooded, cold-hearted extermination of an innocent human life."
Multiple legal challenges from Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, failed during the 13 days of Schiavo's slow death. Even though the U.S. House convened for an extraordinary special session vote during Easter recess and President Bush flew back to Washington from his Texas ranch to sign the bill, courts repeatedly refused to intervene to save the 41-year-old brain-damaged woman, who had been connected to a feeding tube for 15 years.
The Schindlers found broad support in groups rallying to the cause. "Pro-life groups, disability groups and even liberal feminist groups don't like the idea of a husband doing away with his wife," said family attorney Barbara Weller. Everyone from Jesse Jackson to 250 Alabama Assemblies of God youth made appeals to show Schiavo mercy.
Mary Schindler said 48 hours after Terri collapsed, Michael asked her and her husband to sign papers they thought only allowed Michael to be the spokesman to the doctor. "We didn't know we were giving up all rights to Terri," said Schindler, who criticized Michael Schiavo for stopping therapy for Terri 12 years ago. "All I wanted was for my daughter to just have a chance," Schindler told PE Report.
Dana Cody, executive director of the Life Legal Defense Foundation in Napa, California, said the disabled increasingly are being marginalized because of "quality of life" arguments.
"It's become standard operating procedure in the health care community," Cody said. "Seeing Terri die will advance the 'right-to-die' agenda."
Weller cited parallels to Nazi Germany with Circuit Court Judge George Greer's edict to end Schiavo's life. "If they can kill Terri, they will kill many more people," Weller said. "Once they start killing off one group of people who don't mean much to society, who knows where it will end."
Daniel Webster, the Republican senator in Florida who sponsored Terri's Law, which kept the woman alive an additional two years, noted that Schiavo had a heartbeat, brainwaves and - except for the feeding tube - appeared in excellent health. "She was no different than many other people who are severely handicapped," Webster said. "Her life was valuable and worth fighting for."

SILENT WITNESS: The Untold Story of Terri Schiavo's Death by Mark Fuhrman
We all watched Terri Schiavo die. The controversy around her case dominated the headlines and talk shows, going all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the White House and the Vatican.
And its not over yet. Despite her death, the controversy lingers.
In Silent Witness, Mark Fuhrman applies his crack detective skills to examine the medical evidence, legal, and police records. He conducts exclusive interviews with forensics experts and crucial witnesses, including friends, family members and care-givers.
Fuhrman will answer these questions:
*What was Terri and Michael Schiavos marriage really like?
*What happened the day Terri collapsed?
*What do medical records show about her condition when she was first admitted to the hospital?
*What does the autopsy say?
*What was in Michael Schiavos mind when he said he wanted to withdraw life support to end his wifes life?
Fuhrman has complete cooperation of Terri Schiavos family, as well as their medical and legal advisors.
The legal issues and ethical questions provoked by Terri Schiavos extraordinary case may never be resolved. But the facts about her marriage, her condition when she collapsed, and her eventual death fifteen years later, can be determined.
With Silent Witness, Mark Fuhrman will go beyond the legal aspects of the case and delve into the broader, human background of Terri Schivaos short, sad life.
Mark Fuhrman is a retired LAPD detective. He is the author of the New York Times Bestsellers Murder in Brentwood and Murder in Greenwich, as well as Murder in Spokane and Death and Justice. He lives in Idaho.

I had to promise my husband I wouldn't yell at the tv so I could watch that segment. Both of us thought every word he said was a lie. What an evil family.
If anyone finds PROOF this was true, please enlighten us all here...
The point is not that Terri was getting all the SAME therapy as the firefighter, Donald Herbert, but merely that they were BOTH somewhat responsive, and both BETTER than PVS... ("Minimally Conscious" it is called).
There DOES seems to be a decent outline of what her rehab was accomplishing in 1990 and 1991, (Note the bottom half of this article at the TEJ). It involved range of motion exercises, and just getting Terri to RESPOND to anything, smells, sounds, voices, photos, and things like opening her eyes or lifting her legs or arms on command.
These records showed Terri was slowly but clearly getting better, but then Michael cut her rehab to once a week, and then as soon as he got her rehabilitation money, he cut off ALL rehab treatments.
It was in one of these rehab-facilities, Mediplex, where her doctor wrote in her charts, Terri occasionally says "STOP" during procedures.

An autopsy takes longer when you're trying to bury the facts.
Brother of Michael Schiavo, Scott, Speaks Out
Partial transcript of his interview with Alan Colmes on May 9th. Scott blames the Schindlers for all of Michael's problems.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,156078,00.html
COLMES: The Schindlers accuse Michael of disobeying a court order. What's your reaction to that?
SCOTT SCHIAVO: Disobeying the court order of her burying the ashes?
COLMES: Yes.
SCOTT SCHIAVO: This is just a way to make, you know, Michael look like the bad guy. The ashes aren't buried yet.
COLMES: Do they need to be informed of where they are?
SCOTT SCHIAVO: They do. And Mike will let them know when he makes the decision. He's not sure what he's doing yet.
COLMES: So no court order has been disobeyed?
SCOTT SCHIAVO: No, Mike hasn't you know, if anybody disobeyed any court order, that was the Schindlers.
COLMES: They say there was a bone scan that they became aware of in 2002?
SCOTT SCHIAVO: Well, that's false. They knew about that bone scan way back when it was done. There was no they knew all about it. There was nothing that you know, this is the whole thing. They come out with these accusations, and it's all smoke and mirrors for them.
COLMES: Why?
SCOTT SCHIAVO: This is all about them. People that know Bob Schindler, they know who he is. And this is a profit-making proposition for him. This is all about them.
Those Schiavo brothers are a piece of work, aren't they?
They come across as arrogant bullies.
Schiavo is nothing but a lying, arrogant bully.
Based on some research I have done, I believe the term "narcissistic personality disorder" (NPD) is relevant to this case. Poor innocent Terri got taken over by a control freak with a personality that demands adulation as a source of "power", and when that stops, the other becomes worthy of destruction. The day she dared say she wanted a divorce she became the enemy who needed to be destroyed. And whatever lies it took to achieve that, was what would happen. I admire the constancy of the Schindler family in resisting this evil. They deserve our awe and love.
Absolutely.
Robert Schindler in particular demonstrated tremendous character throughout the ordeal at the hospice in Pinellas Park.
Here was a man who was going through the worst ordeal a father could possibly imagine--his little girl being tortured to death in front of his eyes--while he could do nothing to stop it. And yet over and over again he took the time to minister to Terri's supporters who were also grieving. It was a wonder to behold.
Bob Schindler is a great example for all of us about what it means to be a real man.
Not very convincing is he.
