The Vatican said yesterday that Chineses authorities have carried out a new series of arrests of officials from China's illegal Roman Catholic Church.
The most recent arrest occurred Wednesday, when a priest was picked up in Hebei, the same diocese whose bishop was arrested Jan. 3.
In a prepared statement, the Vatican said security forces also detained the 86-year-old bishop of Wenzhou, Monsignor James Lin Xili, on March 20 and, two days later, a lay offical of the diocese.
China broke ties with the Vatican in 1951 and demands that Catholics worship only in churches approved by the state-controlled church group. Government churches do not recognize the pope's authority, although they acknowledge the pope as spiritual leader.
Many Chinese Catholics remain fiercely loyal to Rome and risk arrest by worshipping in unofficial churches and private homes.

I read something on another thread about a Chinese Cardinal being appointed secretly, one in Vietnam also.
The last communists that tried that route got their heads handed to them.

I'd like to see some of the SMART Wal Mart "Christian" BUYERS take this topic as a personal issue and challenge the PREFERRED nation of China to loosen up on this most important of all liberties. Someone with audacity needs to push a 'hot button' and tell someone some definite decline in Ordering GOODS will definitely ensue if there isn't more tolerance for 'faith'.
It's most definitely an improbability, at least this time around, but they do not have to choose a current Cardinal to be Pope. Heck, *I'm* eligible! And there is the good possibility that the Cardinal named in pectore is Chinese -- while he is no longer considered a Cardinal (unless the Pope left instruction that his name be revealed?) he could be a plausible candidate. Then there is the Vietnamese cardinal who will take part in the conclave, Pham Minh Mân.
Still unlikely but you never know which way the Holy Spirit will blow.
On another thread a Nigerian-born Vatican Cardinal seems to be a favorite, because Nigeria is 50% Muslim and 40% Christian. It's believed he could carry on JPII's work on bringing the various religions of the world toward reconcilliation.

And as Johnny Z has pointed out, Viet Nam has Pham Minh Man and Viet Nam also has Phan Dinh Tung.
and true Johnny, a pope can be any male, I don't look for the cardinals to go against a few hundred years of tradition in electing a non-cardinal to be the next pope.
But as much as I'd like another non-Italiano, I'm putting my money on another Italiano as the next pope...

That would be Cardinal Arinze who enraged homosexuals and liberals at Georgetown with his commencement address. Cardinal Arinze or Cardinal Biffi get my (Protestant) votes. However, if they elected a conservative Chinese Pope, that would be double-special.

On Oct. 21, 2003, John Paul II created 30 new cardinals, including Archbishop Justin Rigali of Philadelphia, in a ceremony in St. Peter's Square.
One cardinal was created in pectore. The best guess is that he is Bishop Joseph Zen Ze-kiun of Hong Kong. Others have suggested Archbishop Stanislaw Dziwisz (the pope's personal secretary), Archbishop Sean O'Malley of Boston, or the Latin-rite Patriarch Michel Sabbah of Jerusalem.
When a person is named a cardinal "in pectore" (in the heart), it means that his name is not made public, and if the pope dies before his name is made public he cannot go to a conclave and elect a new pope. Often, the man himself does not know. In the past, the pope has appointed cardinals in pectore from China or other Communist countries where the government would oppose the appointment. Cardinal Ignatius Gong Pinmei of Shanghai, who spent 30 years in a Chinese prison, was made a cardinal "in pectore" in 1979. In 1989, the year after he was allowed to go to the United States for medical treatment, Gong had an audience with the pope and learned that he had been elevated to cardinal. The pope did not announce the choice until 1991.
In 1998, Marian Jaworski, archbishop for the "Roman" or "Latin" Catholics of Lviv in Ukraine, and Janis Pujats, archbishop of Riga) were appointed in pectore but their names were not made public until January 28, 2001. These cardinals received their red birettas at the Feb. 21, 2001, consistory and have seniority over the cardinals created after 1998.
