Michael Schiavo in hiding after death threats
Daily Telegraph ^ | 4/3/05 | Jacqui Goddard

Posted on 04/02/2005 7:03:33 PM PST by Cableguy

Terri Schiavo's widower has gone into hiding because of the furore over his wife's death and has sought police protection.

Michael Schiavo, 41, is under guard three days after his disabled wife died from dehydration at a Florida hospice.

She had spent 13 days without food or water after a United States judge upheld Mr Schiavo's claim that she would not have wished to continue life in a persistently vegetative state.

"His goal is to find safe housing because of these death threats," said a friend, Alan Shoopak. "It's not over. Unfortunately, it's just beginning."

Mrs Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who went to the US Supreme Court to block the removal of their daughter's feeding tube, admit that they care little for their son-in-law, but have urged against revenge attacks.

"Our family abhors any violence, or any threats of violence. We ask that all those who support our family be completely kind in their words and deeds towards others," said Mrs Schiavo's sister, Suzanne Vitadamo.

Anger at Mr Schiavo's actions has been fuelled by the revelation that a court order from a county judge, George Greer, who repeatedly refused the Schindlers' pleas to let their daughter live, will allow him to have her cremated and her ashes interred in Pennsylvania. The Schindlers' request for a share of the ashes or even a lock of their daughter's hair has also been refused.

The family see it as the final act in a 12-year campaign of spite by their son-in-law. Other alleged snubs include having his wife's wedding ring melted down to make a ring for himself.

Last week, while his wife's life ebbed away at the Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida, Mr Schiavo moved into quarters on site, to avoid protesters outside. Some had banners expressing vitriol for Mr Schiavo and Judge Greer. "You are going to hell, murderers," one read. The hospice also received hoax bomb threats last week.

For several days, Mr Schiavo has not returned to the home in Clearwater he shares with his fiancée, Jodi Centonze, and their two children. Friends speculate that they may leave Florida altogether.

The results of a post-mortem examination, which it is believed may shed more light on years-old bone fractures Mrs Schiavo suffered, and the extent of her brain damage, will be published within weeks.

Mr Schiavo's friends and family speak of a man who honoured his wife's wishes and released her from what he perceived to be a life without hope. After cradling her in his arms as she died on Thursday morning, he placed a rose in her hand and kissed her goodbye.

A Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday.

Gee, we're just all broken up about that.

"Other alleged snubs include having his wife's wedding ring melted down and made into a ring for himself."

Sloppy reporting. He did that a long time ago and then the courts named this "loving husband" Terri's guarding, in spite of his wedding ring melting and other "wife" HERE listed under "Marriage vows" third set of boxes down from the top.

There's also THIS
(Tragically, it was put together when people thought Terri might find an ounce of compassion from judges, and politicians, and be spared from a terrible death of dehydration/starvation)

What's with this moron calling MS a "widower"-YIIEEESSHH! that's about like calling Scott Peterson a "widower".

Uggggghhhhhhhh! Stupid, lazy, worthless, idiots. These "journalists" are really only talented enough to be pushing shopping carts on skid row, not "reporting".

Imagine if you made as many mistakes as these so-called "Professional Journalists" make on any given day. Would you be able to keep your job?

Has he gone into hiding from people who threaten him, or out of fear he'll be prosecuted?

He'll start abusing his girlfriend or he'll lose his temper with a coworker one of these days.

Michael recently got a job, as a nurse in the jail, from ex-Sheriff Everett Rice.. Male Nurse Michael did not have to be interviewed by Rice, before he was hired.

Jodi Centonze's mother worked for Rice for over a decade.

FairOpinion - "MS, his brother, and brother's wife claimed Terri made some off hand remarks -- first of all off had remarks, even if she did make them, can't be sufficient to put someone do death, and we only have the word of some very biased witnesses. Terri's family and long time friends testified to just the opposite."

You can say that all you want, it does not make it true. That is a myth, For one, his brothers wife was Terri's best friend and it was not 'off hand' remarks. Find me a link anywhere during the court hearings where there was testimony after Terri was 12 years old where she said just the opposite [not affidavits that are appearing in the last year]. Terri's parents said they did not think she would say that and testified they did not care if she did, it was against their wishes [they had a bad lawyer to allow them to put that on the record]. Bet every judge that reviewed the case was directed by Felos to these statements by the Schindler's.

http://abstractappeal.com/schiavo/WolfsonReport.pdf - on page 14 of report to Gov Bush from Guardian Ad Litem, Dr Jay Wolfson, PHD.

Testimony provided by members of the Schindler family included very personal statements about their desire and intention to ensure that Theresa remain alive. Throughout the course of the litigation, deposition and trial testimony by members of the Schindler family voiced the disturbing belief that they would keep Theresa alive at any and all costs. Nearly gruesome examples were given, eliciting agreement by family members that in the event Theresa should contract diabetes and subsequent gangrene in each of her limbs, they would agree to amputate each limb, and would then, were she to be diagnosed with heart disease, perform open heart surgery. There was additional, difficult testimony that appeared to establish that despite the sad and undesirable condition of Theresa, the parents still derived joy from having her alive, even if Theresa might not be at all aware of her environment given the persistent vegetative state. Within the testimony, as part of the hypotheticals presented, Schindler family members stated that even if Theresa had told them of her intention to have artificial nutrition withdrawn, they would not do it.

But, for the 'millionth time', you are being fooled by myth's. I'll post it again. Check it out sometime.

Schiavo Thoughts: Myths, Inexcusable Myths

For years now, the most popular myth regarding the Schiavo case was that Michael Schiavo decided what should happen to Terri, and the court system simply enforced his right to make that decision.

Over time, most of the major media figured out that a trial was actually held between Michael Schiavo and the Schindlers. Most. Not all.

Yet even as much of the country learned that a trial had been held and the judge found the evidence clear and convincing that Terri wished not to receive life-prolonging medical care in this sort of situation, another myth began to emerge. And this one never went away. ---- That the clear and convincing evidence of Terri's wishes was just Michael Schiavo's word.

How is it possible that none of these people -- or at least the folks who feed them information -- ever read what the trial judge actually said about the evidence he relied on? [just read posts here and you would not be amazed]

Look back at Judge Greer's February 2000 order.

http://abstractappeal.com/schiavo/trialctorder02-00.pdf

He explained that the clear and convincing evidence did not come from Michael's testimony alone. In fact, the judge acknowledged, without necessarily accepting, a guardian ad litem's position that Michael's testimony could not amount to clear and convincing evidence.

Looking at the trial judge's ruling, he did rely on Michael's testimony, but he also placed tremendous weight on Michael's brother and sister-in-law, Scott Schiavo and Joan Schiavo. The trial judge found their testimony and that of one of the Schindlers' witnesses to be so significant that he had their trial testimony transcribed after the trial so he could review it again. The trial judge explained:

------ [court order] As with the witness called by the Respondents [the Schindlers], the court had the testimony of the brother and sister-in-law transcribed so that the court would not be hamstrung by relying on its notes. The court has reviewed the testimony of Scott Schiavo and Joan Schiavo and finds nothing contained therein to be unreliable. The court notes that neither of these witnesses appeared to have shaded his or her testimony or even attempt to exclude unfavorable comments or points regarding those discussions. They were not impeached on cross-examination. Argument is made as to why they waited so long to step forward but their explanations are worthy of belief.

The court also pointed to an expert witness who testified that the oral statements reported by Scott and Joan were consistent with statements of a person Terri's age:

------- [court order] The testimony of Ms. Beverly Tyler, Executive Director of Georgia Health Discoveries, clearly establishes that the expressions made by Terri Schiavo to these witnesses are those type of expressions made in those types of situations as would be expected by people in this country in that age group at that time. They (statements) reflect underlying values of independence, quality of life, not to be a burden and so forth. "Hooked to a machine" means they do not want life artificially extended when there is not hope of improvement.

Later in the decision, the court explained that Terri made different types of statements during her life, including statements where she spoke of what she would want for other people, and statements where she spoke of what she would want for herself. The court said:

------- [court order] There are some comments or statement[s] made by Terri Schiavo which the court does not feel are germane to this decision. The court does not feel that statements made by her at the age of 11 or 12 years truly reflect upon her intention regarding the situation at hand. Additionally, the court does not feel that her statements directed toward others and situations involving others would have the same weight as comments or statements regarding herself if personally placed in those same situations. Into the former category the court places statements regarding Karen Ann Quinlan and the infant child of the friend of Joan Schiavo. The court finds that those statements are more reflective of what Terri Schiavo would do in a similar situation for someone else.

Finally, Judge Greer's order discussed the testimony on which he ultimately relied. He said:

----- [court order] The court does find that Terri Schiavo did make statements which are creditable and reliable with regard to her intention given the situation at hand. Initially, there is no question that Terri Schiavo does not pose a burden financially to anyone and this would appear to be a safe assumption for the foreseeable future. However, the court notes that the term "burden" is not restricted solely to dollars and cents since one can also be a burden to others emotionally and physically. Statements which Terri Schiavo made which do support the relief sought by her surrogate (Petitioner/Guardian) include statements to him prompted by her grandmother being in intensive care that if she was ever a burden she would not want to live like that. Additionally, statements made to Michael Schiavo which were prompted by something on television regarding people on life support that she would not want [a] life like that also reflect her intention in this particular situation. Also the statements she made in the presence of Scott Schiavo at the funeral luncheon for his grandmother that "if I ever go like that just let me go. Don't leave me there. I don't want to be kept alive on a machine" and to Joan Schiavo following a television movie in which a man following an accident was in a coma to the effect that she wanted it stated in her will that she would want the tubes and everything taken out if that happened to her are likewise reflective of this intent. The court specifically finds that these statements are Terri Schiavo's oral declarations concerning her intention as to what she would want done under the present circumstances and the testimony regarding such oral declarations is reliable, is creditable and rises to the level of clear and convincing evidence to this court.

These findings show that Michael's testimony was not the clear and convincing evidence the court relied upon -- Michael's testimony was only part of that evidence. Two other witnesses who were not impeached gave what the court found to be specific, reliable, and creditable statements about her wishes. One of them was, as I understand it, Terri's best friend in the years before her collapse.

Friends speculate that they may leave Florida altogether. ...He placed a rose in her hand,

Yet, when she was alive and needed something to keep her ever tightening hands from pain - because of the "no therapy" order from MS - he would not even let them put a rolled washcloth in her hands -

I don't believe in revenge. I trust God to take care of it. But I have no pity for that POS and what he's going to face. It's nothing to the years of hell he put Terri through.

I understand he was getting shunning and disgusted reactions when he went out in public back during the days before the tube was finally pulled. And I've read he's 6'7" - with that height and the fact that his face is known worldwide - he's going to be living a secluded and or scared-for-his=life existence. Small justice for what he's done - but it's something.

An investigation would be better - an arrest for ignoring the Congressional summons would make me feel a bit better

Too bad the police didn't protect Terri from Michael and Judge Greer. Looks to me like they allowed the innocent to be killed and now they are protecting the killer.

Well, he got himself a job as a nurse for - the police dept.

"The Schindler's request for a share of the ashes or even a lock of their daughter's hair has also been refused."

But..... the article is about poor, poor , poor Michael, da poor wittle baby, everyone in the world hates him, he can't leave, go out in public, poor, poor thing.

I just luv how the press is trying to make him a victim, luv it. Everyone's true nature is being revealed by this case.

How was your Easter judges and politicians? Was it nice? Did you have your children and grandchildren with you? I'm sure we can assume that no one tried to starve and dehydrate them right in front of you?

But Terri gets the last laugh. She's in heaven with Pope Jonh Paul while Michael lives his hell on earth.

Yup. Terri got a personal escort Home to the Father.

Wonder if michael didn't feel a chill at the Pope going so close to Terri.

BTW, I'm not sure I believe this story. It sounds like something Felos and company would cook up to drum up sympathy for Michael and paint the Schindlers and other Right-to-Life supporters as bad guys.

You are probably right.

Felos will spin the autopsy report and we'll learn that Terri broke those bones herself during her initial falling down episode or that it was CPR, or some form of osteoporosis. It was Terri's fault, anyway. Anyone with even the smallest understanding of bulemia and anorexia will tell you it involves low self esteem. (Michael doubtless had a lot to do with that.) The former head of the National Institute of Health, Dr. Catherine Bernadine, said the other night that she was shocked and upset to see that Terri had no physician at her bedside to look out for her interests. I guess Michael and Felos didn't want that.

Now that Terri is safe in the Arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, maybe some of us can laugh again . . . maybe not.

I am sure that Terri is better off and happier now than she was being abused by that thing that called himself her husband and it was a terrible thing what they did to her but what was the real tragedy is what he did to her in the years after her so called "collapse". Denying her the care that most likely would have resulted in, if not a totally normal life, at least a good life for her.
