TOMBSTONE, Ariz. — They came by the hundreds Friday, men and women from across the nation, hearts brimming with righteous anger, determined to staunch the flow of illegal immigration.

Some wore pistols slung low on their hips. Others walked the dusty streets in leather cowboy hats, wearing buttons that read: "Undocumented Border Patrol Agent." There were pilots, window washers, private investigators and exterminators.

A couple of years ago, I was discussing immigration with my brother who reads the Economist cover to cover and he mentioned this study. I can't say I have a link.

What prompted the thought was the soccer fields near where I live in N. VA. The fields cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to perfect. One weekend I watched as the fields were destroyed by a foreign born (I guarantee you most were) men's soccer teams.

Something struck me as not quite right about this usage of the fields. After my brother mentioned that article, I understood what my gut feeling had been.

These teams had a perfectly legitimate right to use the fields, I don't dispute that fact. My realization was that there was no way the player on these teams paid even a fraction of the use they derived from the fields. The lion's share of those funds, and the existence of the fields in the first place, came from generations of American labor and taxes.

It's nice to be able to just show up, step in, and take advantage of another country's accomplishments and wealth isn't it?

Of course, the soccer fields are a minor example compared to other infrastructure such as schools and hospitals.

I agree with you. There is a very easy way to stop the flow of illegal aliens. You punish the people who hire them. It's just like prostitution. If you punish the customers ( those who HIRE )..game's over. Closing the border is very, very expensive. And the demand is still there. as it is now. There are many Americans competing for a lot of these jobs...construction,etc. We are going to pay one way or another. I personally would rather pay $5 for a head of lettuce than $50 in raised taxes to support the illegals with schools, medical benefits etc.

But you can't arm people in militia and not expect to have violence.

On more humorous note, I can't think of a large number of people already here who'll ever contribute more than they consume.

You could be right about this fact, but something is still working as our national wealth seems to be increasing.

Of course, all that could be a house of cards when you look at national debt, personal debt, corporate debt, and the savings rate. What happens when the first domino falls.

Then again, I've heard people saying such things for twenty years!

I thought the MM were going to patrol mostly on private property. The land owners could let MM in and keep ACLU out. ACLU could then go chase themselves. That's what they do anyway.

You can bet that it won't be ACLU lawyers who will be out tramping across the arid wastes behind the Minutemen.

Have you ever seen ACLU mouthpieces? Wussie little bespectacled girlie men geeks who would shriek and faint if their Guccis stepped on a rattler.

More than likely the ACLU camp follower band will consist of lesbian legal secretaries and the local liberal male elites who will bring along beefalo sandwiches and Mango Gatorade in their L.L. Bean knapsacks. They'll last about 1 day in the desert heat and then retire in elegant retreat to their security-patrolled gated communities.

The Minutemen will stay the course......not the ACLU Minuet-men.

Shall we dance?

You may follow the law, you may respect the law. I'm not saying you're all vigilantes. But if EarthFirst says that its members no longer break the law or advocate violence in the name of the environment, does that mean we believe every member of EarthFirst will also comply? The same applies to the Minutemen. Forgive me for my skepticism, but frankly I think its deserved. The group might not be a problem, but some individuals might be. I may be wrong here, but generally when I expect the worst, about anyone or anything, I'm usually right.

LOL, Now I can't tell who you are talking about. The illegal immigrants or the legal residents.

I have lived in the Southwest for many years and I know many of the Mexicans who immigrate to the US (legal or otherwise) are hard working and want nothing more than to make a decent living.

The thing that sticks in my craw is a Mexican government that demands that we accept illegal immigration and the possiblity that our enemies are using the border to infiltrate the US.

"beefalo sandwiches"

Isn't that un-PC? I would have imagined sprouts instead.

I'm unaware of the stated goals of "Earth First," but I do know that they have a history of violence. .....so their stated "mission" could very well leave open the possibility of violence to accomplish their goals.

In addition, leftists (like Earth Firsters) tradionally have a disrespect for the law.

So unless the Minutemen break the law, try to restrain yourself from placing them in the same company as ultra-leftist terrorists and calling them vigilantes (lawbreakers).

It's outrageous that the President of the U.S. doesn't know the meaning of the word 'vigilante'.

Don't kid yourself. He knows the meaning of the word.

And it's outrageous that he's done nothing to secure or borders in a time of war.

He doesn't care about the border in time or war or otherwise. He cares about cheap, illegal immigrant labor, cheap Chinese imports, and cheap offshore techno-workers. It's essential to the one-world, globalist, New World Order.

Once I again, I fall back upon expecting the worst. The Minutemen may not have a history of violence. That's because as a group they don't really have much of a history. Similar groups to the Minutemen do have a history of violence. It may not be fair to the Minutemen, but as far as I'm concerned, if it is a cow, it is a cow. If it is a cow in a hat, it is still a cow. A different name in a different time does not mean I'll expect any difference. And yes, I know this may not be fair to the Minutemen. Call it age and experience. Call it prejudice. Call it what you will, but I don't expect armed groups of civilians, or soldiers for that matter, to go traipsing about the countryside without anyone getting shot.

" I wouldn't put it past some of the people who would be involved with the Minutemen to open fire on immigrants."

Funny, they've been down there for days and noones fired a shot.

Bye bye..

"We will stay about 50 to 100 yards behind them to deter the use of violence and document any illegal activity," said Ray Ybarra of the Arizona ACLU."

A lot of accidents can happen in the Arizona desert. They better be careful.

On what exactly do you base your opinion?

IF you're going to produce methane-based nonsense, don't expect to be taken seriously....

From anyone.

Similar groups to the Minutemen do have a history of violence.

Once again, the violent leftist groups (like Earth First) that you insist on labeling "similar" to the MM are in fact not even remotely similar in any respect. Saying that you "expect the worst" of the MM is fair enough (that's your opinion), but calling 'vigilantes' is irresponsible. ...and just plain wrong.

It's not only wrong, but slanderously absurd.

This newbie poster (and perhaps FROBL alias) is a lying troll who won't be hanging around too much longer at this rate.
