"...Only the Holy Spirit knows how that will unfold, he said, declining to speculate on candidates..."

The fact that this cardinal was not defrocked defines the political problem with the Church. I couldn't care less where he goes, what he does or says unless he's leaving. He allowed the homosexual scandal rack the Church and if that's not cause for dismissal, I don't know what is.
As a conservative, traditional Catholic, I'd be for getting rid of any bishop who didn't eject homosexual clergy in the last four decades, without exception and refusing to ordain more of them. That was the papal order and the US hierarchy who ignored it should be penalized. It is THEY who are responsible for the Scandal in the Church.
SouthCarolinaKit, I understand your frustration. What I don't understand is Cardinal Mahony's position, his responsibilities, his powers nor the injustices perpetuated on the innocent.
why does it have to be Mahony?
God help us. What does he think this is, his first prom? Sorry, but I can't stand that man.
Remember the "cathedral" he had built? Grand Central Station has more solemnity than that cold, barren barn. I can just see him on the plane ride, agonizing about which cassock to wear to the conclave. I've had enough of him.
Thank you for mentioning this. I had a similar experience on LI with a visiting priest from Nigeria. He had the most piercing eyes, as if he could read one's soul.
I arrived early and saw this priest kneeling, totally immersed in prayer. He then vested and began the Mass. During the Consecration, I looked up to see him surrounded by a golden aura. Like you, I have never experienced it again.
I think Cardinal Arinze would be a good choice.
So how did Rembert Weakland, Roger Mahony and other liberals, reach their current positions? A recent article offers up that explanation.
" ... if veteran Vatican reporter Robert Blair Kaiser, who recently interviewed Jadot at his home in Belgium, can be believed, Jadot is still proud of some of his most notorious picks, such as Bishop Walter Sullivan of Richmond, Va., Archbishop Rembert Weakiand of Milwaukee, and Roger Cardinal Mahony of Los Angeles - to name but a few, many of whom are known more for their advocacy of homosexual rights, their protection of pederast priests, and their conunitment to modernism than to their commitment to the Church's doctrines.
Other men who became bishops during Jadot's tenure in the United States include Rochester Bishop Matthew Clark; Albany's Howard Hubbard; former Santa Fe Archbishop Roberto Sanchez, who resigned in a sex scandal; former San Jose Bishop Pierre DuMaine; former Honolulu Bishop Joseph Ferrario; San Antonio Archbishop Patrick Flores; former Newark Archbishop Peter Gerety; Joliet, Ill., Bishop Joseph Imesch; Louisille Archbishop Thomas C. Kelly, O.P., a former staffer at the apostolic nuncio under Jadot; Bernard Cardinal Law of Boston (whom Jadot selected as bishop for Springfield-Cape Girardeau, Mo.), Cincinnati Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk; Saginaw, Mich., Bishop Kenneth Untener - to name a few more - all of whom, supposedly, mirrored his own progressive image as a "man of the people."
Each of these prelates has been a strong advocate of the pro-homosexual agenda in the U.S. Church, ordaining homosexuals, imposing pro-homosexual education on Catholic schools, aiding and abetting special rights legislation in the civil realm for homosexuals, and giving free rein to homosexuals and lesbians in religious orders which operated schools, universities, parishes, seminaries, and retreat houses in their dioceses and archdioceses."
Still Proud Of Bishops He Gave U.S.
Essentially, he intentionally recommended young men to these powerful positions, fully expecting they would outlive the pope and be in a position to elect a more liberal pontiff at the next Conclave.
Mercifully, God is still in control :-).
Mahony should be in Prison along with "card" Law and about 20 other hierarchal Miscreants.
Egan, Daily, Murphy, McCormack and Banks come to mind.
All the Cardinals are going to Rome.
How is it that Mahony gets pages space in the LAT?
Follow the money, honey?????
Inquiring minds want to know.
Ah, the devil himself is flying to Rome.
maphony started out in the valley with the mexican farm workers. so, he's a darling of the catholic left.
but, he's liked by the catholic rino's. si.
for example, about 1986 richard riordan and some other wealthy l.a.-ers bought maphony his own helicopter.
the archbishop is a pilot.

Thank you for the links, Salvation. :)
Ughhh, Egan and McCarick...devils. V's wife.
I wonder when the demon gave Mahony the order to go to Rome? Oh but silly me. When you cohabit like that you just know that sort of thing, don't you...
Interestingly, the other US Cardinals have remained here, offering up Masses for the pontiff's special intentions. What's the big rush? Ample time will be given all of them to travel to Rome for the funeral and Conclave.
Thank you Lauren. I just turned on the televsion and found that he has passed. We are poorer for his loss but richer for having had him.
