Caring for injured officer is family's 'only choice' (another Schiavo case)

Diana May of Modesto (California) cried when she heard that Terri Schiavo had died.

She never knew Schiavo. Like most people, she watched as a controversy unfolded over whether the 41-year-old woman should live or die.

"I've tried not to watch too much of this," May said. "It really hit home."

Like Schiavo, May's husband is in what doctors call a persistent vegetative state.

Modesto police Sgt. Steve May, now 48, went into a coma after a fleeing suspect crashed a stolen pickup into his squad car in the airport neighborhood on July 29, 2002.

....snip....

A few weeks after the crash, Steve May opened his eyes, but he has remained in a vegetative state.

May and her husband always knew he could be killed in the line of duty. What they never imagined was that he could be "left like this," she said.

"We did not have a living will or an advanced medical directive," she said. "Everybody should, obviously."

Steve May's eyes sometimes move, but there is no continuous, purposeful movement.

"Maybe it's wishful thinking, but there are just times when you know (he's) there," Diana May said.

Steve May can move some. He coughs, and, as Schiavo did, he swallows. But he gets nutrition through a feeding tube, and he breathes through a tube in his throat.

Doctors have said he has between 0 percent and 1 percent chance of any recovery, and no chance of a full recovery, his wife said.

Still, May said, she would never pull his feeding tube, as Schiavo's husband did.

"There's no way on God's green Earth," she said. "I would not let him starve. What a painful way that she went. I can't even imagine."

God Bless Diana May, give her the strength she needs to care for her husband.

Sounds like a fine lady who loves her husband.

God Bless this woman. I'll bet she doesn't have a lover and 2 kids to boot, either. Nor would she melt down their wedding rings to make a single piece of jewelry for herself. Or have his pets destroyed instead of given to good homes, deny him therapy, food, water, and medication for a painful UTI--or any infection for that matter--etc...

Michael Schiavo is an evil, mean-spirited monster compared to this woman.

Everything is so contingent on who you were blessed or cursed to marry. One of the most important things you will ever do is choose the person to whom you say about "I do."

Now there's a loving spouse for you! She obviously loves him with every fiber of her being and took her vows seriously.

That woman is a blessing to her husband and children, and she is also a blessing to humanity.

How many times must it be said...Terri was not PVS(vegetable). It amazes me how far the MainStream Propagandist (MSP) will go to accomplish their agenda.

Ain't that the truth! I have very high standards when it comes to choosing my life partner, so, when I do get married I would hope that he will be human enough to consult my mother, the person who brought me into this world, about life or death issues concerning me. Although, he really won't have a say in that matter because I have already designated my mother to be the person to make life or death decisions for me if I ever were to become incapacitated.

"We did not have a living will or an advanced medical directive," she said. "Everybody should, obviously."

Suicide is immoral because we do not own our own bodies — God does. We lack the jurisdiction to determine whether we should live or die. It is biblically and (at common law) legally invalid to request assistance in the suicide of ones self through starvation or any other means. Even had Terri made such a recommendation (and there is no credible evidence that she did), Terri herself lacks jurisdiction to call for her own death by dehydration, starvation, or any other means which involves the suspension of a basic, God-appointed duty of care. Again, we must distinguish between the challenging ethical issues surrounding “extraordinary measures” in the midst (for example) of massive and persistent organ failure, versus the ethically perverse decision to deprive disabled or neurologically-impaired thriving humans of basic care. To the extent that any “living will” calls for termination of basic care, it is tantamount to a request for assisted suicide, which is biblically unlawful.

-- This is something I read on a blog earlier.

runningbear, do you by any chance know this women? If you do give her a big hug from all of us and let her know how much we appreciate that she has a great love for her husband.

But let's face facts: girls don't pull out feeding tubes on their husbands.

Only if Schiavo had made her wishes very clear — agreeing to have a feeding tube pulled — should anyone have the right to do so, she said.

That is an attitude we must change. Euthanasia is wrong.

This story does point out that the value of a life is not completely about the value of the life to the person whose life it is, but also to others around them, a spouse, children, siblings. A great deal of good can come from a life which likely has no meaning to the person whose life it is.

My heart goes out to this woman but I have little sympathy for the author.

Terri was never in a coma. She was not PVS. She never breathed through a tube in her neck. Her eye movements weren't random.

She laughed and smiled and tried to speak.

Please her heart - this is the way marriege is supposed to work - 'in sickness and in health, foresaking all others'....

Michael never got that part - and it is obvious from other things I am reading - his wickedness does not stop there.

Prayers to the Mays - God's Will Be Done. JK

Bless Diana May. This is not an easy road in life.

We lack the jurisdiction to determine whether we should live or die.

BINGO! To us, that power is ultra vires, or beyond our legal scope or power of authority.

To our government, our inalienable rights are ultra vires as well.

Not all guys do either. Look at Kate Adamsons husband.

He not only fought the hospital who wanted to kill her off, but he insisted they better treat her as a human being or else.
