BBC: Anger growing over Schiavo death

A political row has broken out in the US after the death of Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged woman at the heart of a long-running legal dispute.

Senior Republican Tom DeLay, who leads the House of Representatives, attacked the US courts for allowing Mrs Schiavo to die, calling them "out-of-control".

Mrs Schiavo, 41, died in Florida on Thursday, 13 days after a feeding tube keeping her alive was disconnected.

Her husband had fought for the tube's removal, saying it was what she wanted.

Mr DeLay promised continued support for Mrs Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who led the campaign to keep their daughter alive.

They disagreed with the verdict of court-appointed doctors, who said she was in an irreversible persistent vegetative state.

Divided country

"We promised the Schindler family that we will not let Terri die in vain," Mr DeLay said.

"We will look at an arrogant, out-of-control, unaccountable judiciary that thumbed their nose at Congress and the president."

TERRI SCHIAVO CASE

Feb 1990: Terri Schiavo collapses

May 1998: Mr Schiavo files petition to remove feeding tube

Oct 2003: Florida lower house passes "Terri's Law", allowing governor to order doctors to feed Mrs Schiavo

Sept 2004: Florida Supreme Court strikes down law

18 Mar 2005: Florida court allows removal of tube

22 Mar 2005: Federal judge rejects appeal

23 Mar 2005: Appeals court backs federal ruling

29 Mar 2005: Federal court grants parents leave to appeal

30 Mar 2005: Federal court and Supreme Court reject parents' appeal

31 Mar 2005: Terri Schiavo dies

During a seven-year legal battle, state and federal judges consistently ruled against the Schindler family's attempts to prolong Terri Schiavo's life.

The US Supreme Court refused to hear their petitions, despite Congress passing emergency legislation and the support of President George W Bush.

Opinion polls have consistently shown a majority of Americans believed it was right to allow Mrs Schiavo to die.

Speaking after her death, Mr Bush said the strong have a duty to protect the weak.

"In cases where there are serious doubts and questions, the presumption should be in the favour of life," he said.

'For Terri'

Michael Schiavo's overriding concern was to give his wife "a peaceful death with dignity", his lawyer George Felos said on Thursday.

Mr Schiavo was by his wife's side when she died.

Her parents were not at the hospice, and her brother said he was barred from her room shortly before the end.

"This death was not for the siblings, and not for the spouse and not for the parents. This was for Terri."

An autopsy is planned and is expected to show the extent of brain injuries sustained when Mrs Schiavo collapsed after her heart stopped beating temporarily in 1990.

Even if this was a bit too late. I would have to give them credit for this. Hopefully, anger will be turned towards these out of control judges.

This is nothing more than sick, self serving grandstanding. If Congress really wanted to save her life they would have done it. They regularly interfere in things that aren't their business and now we are supposed to believe that there was no way they could stop a single district court judge from murdering an innocent, handicapped woman?
Bottom line, Congress has made a tradition of over-stepping its bounds but in when it comes to stepping in and saving the life of an innocent woman they claim impotence.

I have never been more sickened with our elected representatives, every single one of them.

On another note, notice how the MSM still refers to Terri's "right to die". As if she was dying and be forced to stay alive. I wish just once one of these reporters would tell the truth and call it murder.

There are a lot of media people out there who are suicidal or suicidal on a subliminal level. The bad part is when they shill for the Felos-Schiavos of this world. Bad part is when they promote death for others because they think their own lives are cheap.

The wonderful Schindler family put a high value on Terri's life and so do I.

"A peaceful death with dignity" This mantra endlessly repeated by Felos has been adopted by the MSM. There is nothing either peaceful or dignified about being starved/dehydrated to death.

The liberals, long bereft of new ideas, have finally found one: euthanasia (actually old wine in a dusted off bottle.) And rejoice! It comes along just in time to provide a solution to the forthcoming crises in Social Security and Medicare.

I see the Florida Supreme Court was up to its usual business of corrupting justice.

Politicians are generally phony or become phony after years away from reality. The reality is, however, that the movement to kill the weak has been under way for a long time.

If the killing of Schiavo causes the politicians to challenge the courts then it will be a good thing. The courts have been writing law for too long, subverting the will of the people. Whether Delay or Bush are just phonies looking for a vote, or sincere doesn't matter as much as stopping these runaway judges.

The Congress did what it could anyway.Jeb Bush could have sent the police in but all Congress could do was pass a law and expect the judiciary to uphold it.

Your point about "Terri's right to die" is right on. Sickening how they have to try to convince us the woman was dying in the first place.

Does she count as that? Martyrs were killed because of their profession of faith. Terri was killed because her husband was a louse.

We are too be objective to Michael....when everything he does is to shove it in the Americans face, not only the Schindlers!

Michael Schiavo has locked hands with this Global Ethici/Bioethic aka Hemlock Society, Humanist Manifesto, look it up on the net their agenda....Global Humanity and when you do also include one of our notorious lefty and see how they endorse this "Ogreish Future Governemnt!"

It is important that us God fearing and those who also abide by the Law identify our enemy! Not so we can name call....but to know how we need to hold our own ground!

They want to divide and conqueror thinking they can call us Angry White Men.....our enemy wants to lable us and to demean us....that way we won't matter anymore than the weak disable Terri was, they claim she was bulimic and did this to her self so she has no one to blame but herself,
her rights as a citizen was usurp from her by a necrophiliac!

Many among us are Law abiding citizen who don't hold our religious views BUT DO WANT to live in a community that is SECURE for ALL of US!

This Global Humanist group which is a Ghoulish Religion some are humanist, some are satanist, some even claim to be from various religions of the world which is a mockery etc.

Run a check your doctor, lawyer, politicians, courts, Universties etc!

How many are in your life and you do not even know?

Yes some we have to do business with some, but we should know who we are dealing with THEY SURE KNOW US they have no quams about who we are and what they THINK about us, see how many endorse the Global Code of Ethics!

I see a story today where the BBC is upset with America for letting Terri starve...but who are they blaming one of the Global ethic friend, no! They are blaming the conservative right who stood up for Terri!

IMHO

Mrs Schiavo, 41, died in Florida on Thursday, 13 days after a feeding tube keeping her alive was disconnected. And after the Judge issued orders that stopped all nourishment and water, even via mouth, effectively murdering the woman.
